Meet JeanCarlo Ramirez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful JeanCarlo Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

JeanCarlo , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I developed my ability to take risks through a pivotal decision I made at the age of 19. Instead of opting for a traditional full-time job, I chose to invest my time and energy into building my own production company, ‘indiehousefilms.’ This decision was a significant leap of faith in my artistic abilities and my passion for filmmaking and storytelling.

From the outset, I committed to working on my company full-time, even though it meant venturing into the unknown and forgoing the security of a stable job. Believing in my creative gifts, I embraced the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship. Fast forward to today, at the age of 31, I can proudly say that I have never worked a traditional full-time job, and my initial risk has led to numerous opportunities and collaborations with renowned names such as NatGeo, YoungArts, Hilton Hotels, Hennessy, and the Related Companies and MLS (Major League Soccer) to name a few.

Working alongside Academy Award winners like Doug Blush and Kirk Simon has been a testament to the power of belief in oneself. The success and growth of ‘indiehousefilms’ validate the risks I took early on. Every day, I continue to take risks, pushing the boundaries of my creativity and exploring new opportunities.

The journey has not been without challenges, but the ability to take risks has become a fundamental part of my professional ethos. It has enabled me to carve a unique path in the industry, proving that belief in oneself and the courage to take risks can lead to remarkable achievements and collaborations. My story serves as a constant reminder that embracing uncertainty and trusting in one’s abilities can pave the way for extraordinary accomplishments.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My professional journey has been a fusion of artistic passion, entrepreneurship, and relentless determination. Embracing the initial challenges familiar to many aspiring artists, I hustled through various video projects – from weddings to events and music videos – to save up and invest in my own equipment. As I immersed myself in diverse projects, I honed my skills through continuous practice.

My pursuit of knowledge led me to film school in NYC, supported by a grant. which lasted for a year. While unable to cover the remaining costs, I dropped out of school and started working with production companies and undertaking numerous freelance projects. This period served as a profound learning experience, shaping my approach to filmmaking.

In 2014, I returned to Florida to establish ‘IndieHousefilms,’ where I seamlessly integrated my artistic vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and began to build my team. Over the years, I’ve maintained an unwavering commitment to growth and learning, considering oneself a perpetual student in this ever-evolving field.

The scope of my work with over 100 clients spans diverse sectors – businesses, organizations, and individuals. Notably, I continue to collaborate with my first clients, a testament to the lasting relationships forged through dedication and quality work. Beyond client projects, I’ve hosted creative retreats, organized two annual trips to Iceland, fostering a dynamic and collaborative environment.

My involvement in film festivals and art programs, as both a judge and workshop facilitator at esteemed institutions like The Norton Museum of Arts in West Palm Beach, reflects my commitment to giving back to the artistic community. Having been an alum of YoungArts, a prestigious national arts program in the US, I actively contribute to the film department.

Looking ahead, my aspirations include writing and directing narrative shorts and documentaries. My focus remains on continuous learning, taking risks, and pushing creative boundaries. I am driven by the desire to create impactful stories and contribute meaningfully to the world, and continue growing with IndieHouse Films.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as profoundly impactful. Firstly, resilience has been my constant companion. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, learn from failures, and keep pushing forward has been crucial. In the face of challenges, I’ve always seen them as opportunities for growth.

Secondly, adaptability has played a pivotal role. Embracing change, whether in technology, industry trends, or personal circumstances, has allowed me to stay relevant and innovative. The ever-evolving nature of the filmmaking landscape demands a willingness to adapt and evolve, ensuring that one’s skills remain sharp and valuable.

Lastly, a commitment to continuous learning has been instrumental. Recognizing that the journey is a perpetual learning experience, I’ve sought knowledge from various sources – from hands-on experiences to formal education. Being a perpetual student has not only enhanced my craft but also fueled my passion for storytelling.

For those embarking on their own journeys, my advice is to cultivate resilience, viewing challenges as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Embrace adaptability, for it opens doors to new possibilities and keeps one ahead of the curve. And above all, commit to a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious, explore new techniques, and never underestimate the power of expanding your knowledge base.

Remember, every obstacle is a chance to showcase your resilience, every change is an opportunity for growth, and every piece of knowledge acquired is a tool to shape your success. Trust in your journey, stay hungry for knowledge, and let your passion be the driving force. The path may be challenging, but the rewards are boundless for those who persevere with an open heart and a determined spirit.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most transformative chapter of my journey traces back to a pivotal decision my parents made when I was just seven years old – the decision to move from Colombia to the United States. This courageous leap into the unknown not only shaped my childhood but laid the foundation for a lifetime of opportunity, dreams, and resilience.

In their pursuit of a better life, my parents embarked on a journey that transcended borders and language barriers. Their willingness to start anew, navigating unfamiliar terrain, not only showcased their unwavering determination but became the cornerstone of my own pursuit of dreams.

The move to the U.S. became a canvas of endless possibilities. It exposed me to a world where dreaming big and reaching for the stars was not just encouraged but expected. Witnessing my parents start their careers afresh, braving the challenges of a new language and culture, instilled in me a profound sense of resilience and ambition.

This brave decision didn’t just open doors; it tore down walls of limitations. It became the catalyst for the countless opportunities that I have had the privilege to embrace. From education to career opportunities, every milestone is a testament to the courage my parents exhibited that fateful day.

Their sacrifice echoes in my pursuit of my passions and the relentless pursuit of my dreams. Their story is a constant reminder that challenges are the stepping stones to greatness, and embracing the unfamiliar can lead to extraordinary outcomes. The move to the U.S. wasn’t just a change of location; it was a transformative journey that sculpted my character, instilled in me an unyielding work ethic, and fostered a belief in the boundless possibilities that life offers.

To those navigating the early stages of their journey, I offer this: seize the opportunities within challenges, be unafraid of the unknown, and let the audacity to dream be your guiding light. Just as my parents’ decision illuminated my path, your courage can illuminate yours, forging a destiny rich with possibility and purpose. The journey may be uncertain, but within it lies the potential for greatness.
