We recently connected with Jen Kourtei and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I grew up as an only child with a single mom. I always had everything I needed, but if I wanted anything “extra” I learned at a very young age that I would need to work for it.
My grandmother had a garden in the summer and fruit trees. I would pick the fruits and vegetables and sit in her front yard selling them to the cars passing by.
I would also mow lawns, shovel snow, clean houses…from a very young age I was always figuring out ways to work and earn money. I was applying for jobs on my 16th birthday and was hired at McDonalds that day – I couldn’t wait to work. That mentality has never changed.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Alright, alright…going to be vulnerable and tell you a bit about myself…
I’m Jen, mom to 3 amazing young men. For 16 years, I was in a highly abusive relationship and knew I needed a way out. I had been an aircraft mechanic on F-16’s and then decided to go back to school to get my Master’s in Forensics Biochemistry. Wanting to finish up this degree, while I was a stay-at-home mom to my youngest son, I needed money. Student loans were maxed out and not an option. So, what did I do? Signed up with doTERRA Essential Oils.
I had no idea what I was doing. I have PTSD, so I knew there was no way I was going to hold classes and build my business in a “traditional” way, so I started an Essential Oil Facebook business page. I found my calling…163k followers later and I was in the top 2% of the company as a Blue Diamond Leader in less than 2 years.
A few years after starting that business, I started Jen K Dominate Social Media. I created my own training course where I teach other people how to build their business on social media like I did. This evolved into working with people 1:1 and management services.
I eventually transitioned away from my doTERRA business and went full time into working with others. I’ve managed 100’s of accounts, mentored over 5,000 clients with my Dominate Social Media course, and worked 1:1 with small business owners. Anyone from MLM, B2B, eCommerce, Brick & Mortar, Personal Trainers, Realtors, and more!
So, I’m a lady boss. An independent badass. I have my freedom and I found myself. I’m highly blessed. I’m 100% human. I struggle, I always will. PTSD is part of me, but it doesn’t define me. Rather, it fueled me to find another way to survive and help others find success online too.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am always asked how I went from a degree in Forensics to building a Social Media Management company.
When you think about it, social media has a bit of forensics to it. Just one gigantic mystery of algorithms with pieces and parts that you must fit together until you figure out how it will work. Until you gather all the information and solve the “mystery” you are on this journey discovering how it goes together.
My optimism and resilience is what keeps me forging ahead until I have discovered each client’s story and solved their “mystery” giving them success online.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mom never let me forget that I come from a long line of strong women. No matter what we faced, I knew I would be okay. She taught me that “this time tomorrow” everything could be different and that even if I felt like there was no control, I was always in control of my reaction and my response. Watching her, and her mother, always figure it out…I knew I could too and have.
