We were lucky to catch up with Jenecia Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jenecia, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I persist despite any kind of negativity because I really believe in myself and the gift my creator put inside of me. I believe people will criticize you if you are doing your worst or if you are doing your best. I don’t care what people think about the progress in my life because they have never been in my shoes. People have laughed at me and criticized me for years where I’m from, even my own family. I have big dreams and goals, and I am the only person that can make it happen for me. This means, when everything gets the toughest, when there is no one there but my kids looking up to me, I have to keep going. If you worry about what others think or dwell on negativity towards your goals and dreams, you will not make it to your destination. I believe when the time is right, the right people will be around me when I need. Until then I focus on the positive in my life, and continue to drive towards my destination.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Jenecia Brown also known as BabyDol. I am originally from Mississippi, but I have been in the Atlanta, Georgia area for over 4 years now. I am a licensed Master Cosmetologist in the state of Georgia. I have a business called Jenicia’s Hair Salon Mobile Services where I offer hair, makeup, basic manicure pedicure, and styling services. I am currently working on obtaining my medical wig certification so I can offer medical wigs as an extension of my business. I have a goal of the later summer of 2024 to launch that extension of my business. I am also a musician (singer/songwriter). I have been pursuing music professionally since 2010. This has not been an easy journey for me, but I believe I will reach my goals I have set in place for my music career. I plan to launch an EP late summer of 2024.
I love what I do and I love being able to spread positivity and light to those that I service or work with.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities that have been most impactful on my journey is being humble, being positive, and knowlegable. It is important to remember that no matter how much money you are making or how much success you have to always remain humble and show empathy and kindness to others. Character is everything to me. It is the difference in between someone coming back to me or not for a service. I believe it is important to be in control of your emotions and maintain a level of respect and professionalism. I also believe in keeping my energy positive. Life will throw us many things we can not control, but it is up to us to take accountabliity on what we can do to go forward and not give up. Speaking positive affirmations daily and self care should always be priority. Perfecting my craft and being knowlegable of different techniques in my industry is very important. Learning is never ending no matter how skilled you are. There are different ways to provide the services I do, and being open to learning opens the door for new opportunity and helps build me up as a professional and a person. My advice to those early in their journey is to not let others intimidate you, because what is for you will be for you. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else because you are enough. Take care of your mental and physical. There is no such thing as a failure, but consider it a learning opportunity. Nothing worth having will come easy, so never give up and believe in yourself 100%.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents which are my grandparents, legally adoped me around age 4, and I will forever be grateful as they did not have to. My parents gave me a solid spiritual foundation, instilled work eithic and love in me. My Daddy taught me about forgiveness, and I get my soft heart from him, rest his soul… I was taught to be independent and prioritize character over material things. There were many times, I was stuboorn and made many mistakes, but they still loved me unconditionally. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have these two special people in my life. Without them, I probably would be somewhere I don’t need to be.
