Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenn Bouchard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jenn, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
I have to put myself in different surroundings. If possible, getting out into nature is helpful. This might involve taking a walk among the trees–I’m lucky to live close to Minute Man National Park in Massachusetts, and it’s enjoyable to stroll where so much history happened. Walden Pond is also nearby and a beautiful place. If I can get to the ocean, even better. I try to stay quiet and take notice of everything around me. Usually, this helps. But if not, I will set a timer and just write whatever pops into my head for a limited amount of time. A brainstorm often sparks ideas. Still, some of my best ideas pop into my head when doing mundane things like laundry!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My novels walk the line between women’s fiction and romantic comedy. They are about women at major turning points in their lives when they have to make big decisions about what comes next. FIRST COURSE was published in 2021 and has been the recipient of 14 awards. The audiobook was released earlier this year and sounds fantastic! I have two additional books–PALMS ON THE CAPE and CONSIDERING US–that I hope you’ll get to read soon.
All of my books take place in coastal New England. I am constantly inspired by the beauty and varied landscapes around me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, tenacity, and supportive friends and family are my greatest assets. Believe in yourself and your abilities. There is a path forward if you want it enough; it may look different from the path alongside you, but that’s okay. Keep going. And find your community for support. One of the biggest surprises has been all the wonderful authors I have gotten to know.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I have found it most helpful to read widely in my genres. I learn how to become a better writer while also being a good literary citizen. When I enjoy a book, I always leave reviews. Reviews help an author tremendously! Additionally, I go to author events and hear directly from successful writers to be inspired and to get the best advice. I take notes! When I’m having a rough day, I reread their words of wisdom.
