We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeramy Kahle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeramy below.
Jeramy, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
When we first started thinking about what our show would be, I loved everything about it except for the idea that I’d eventually have to release our content. Creating a show with my friends sounded great, but the public hearing it scared the hell out of me. That might seem bizarre or counterintuitive for someone wanting to start a podcast, but I’d never really put myself out there.
I was having panic attacks when we posted our first few episodes. Those fears only intensified as our show grew and we began bringing guests on, doing live shows, being asked to do an article like this, etc. But I knew that if I wanted this to go anywhere, I’d have to deal with my insecurities. I made myself say ‘yes’ when every fiber of me was screaming ’NO!’.
After I worked out most of the major nerves, I was still feeling a level of imposter syndrome. But over time, after enough people tell you that they love what you do, and enough of the people you interview praise your work, you go from thinking “What business do I have doing this” to thinking, “This is definitely my business”. This show gave me a level of confidence I didn’t know I was capable of having.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the host and producer of the podcast Canned Air: A Tribute to Pop Culture. Along with Jack Dougherty and Randy Hardenbrook, we’ve been producing this show for 10 years now. In that time, we’ve welcomed guests ranging from independent creators and influencers to people we’re fans of from television and films. We’ve welcomed guests like Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Big Bang Theory), Billy West (Ren & Stimpy, Futurama), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Michael Winslow (Police Academy, Spaceballs), Maurice LaMarche (The REAL Ghostbusters, Futurama), Emily Swallow (The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian), Tara Strong (Loki, Voice of Harley Quinn, Powerpuff Girls), and so many more.
We’ve often described this show as a 10 year field trip that never stops being fun. We definitely have our challenges, but never anything that has made us want to quit. We’re about to record our 500th episode, which doesn’t even seem real. We never thought we’d make it to 25 episodes, and here we are at 500. So, we plan to spend the episode looking back at some of our highlights and favorite moments from the past 10 years. If you’ve never listened to the show, this will be a great jumping in point for new listeners!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For most of my life I’ve always been recording something, so I had all of the gear I needed to start podcasting and knew how to use it well enough when the time came. Second is being able to get most people to laugh. I love getting a laugh out of anyone, and sometimes I go too far to get it. My mouth can run faster than my mind when a laugh is on the line.
Last, I would go back to the willingness to say ‘yes’ to opportunities that used to scare me but are great for the show. Overcoming the nerves that would keep me from bringing guests on the show or hosting a live episode has been not only huge for this show’s development, but for changing the way I operate day-to-day.
The best advice I could give to anyone wanting to start a podcast is to just stay persistent. Never let a bad experience or a slump in your downloads be a deterrent. Always challenge yourself with how to evolve what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We’re open to hearing ideas for collaboration of any kind, and we’re always looking to work with new publicists and their clients. We’ve found that having a working relationship with publicists in the entertainment industry is the best way to get the kind of content we want for our show. We get the guests we know our listeners will appreciate as much as we do, while the clients are getting promotion in turn. We’re always actively looking for new talent to work with, so if you’re a publicist and need some promotion for your client, shoot an email to [email protected] and let us know!
