We were lucky to catch up with Jess Casinelli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jess, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I recently decided to reset my mindset to a pretty simple and seemingly obvious thought process. “We are all going to die.. and it can happen at any time”. Now, I know that may seem like the most antonymic phrase to optimism, but it’s actually been extremely helpful to me. I lived in constant fear, anxiety and self-deprecation for a really long time. I truly believe now, that if I don’t know when my last day will be, I want to make sure I’m spending my time alive doing whatever makes me feel most fulfilled, for however much longer I have in this version of life. Redirecting my days to make sure I am doing what I want has led to a way more positive outlook on everything, and overall more feeling of hope and happiness.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an American-Italian, singer/songwriter from Connecticut, currently based in LA. I started writing songs as a kid and just never stopped. I moved out to LA by myself at 18, straight after high school to attend college. I graduated with a songwriting degree and slowly started trickling my way into getting work within the business side of music during the day. I have a pretty cool flow going right now where I am able to learn about the music industry from a different perspective, every day, at a job that is simultaneously allowing me to fund my artist project. I spend my lunch breaks, nights and weekends working on everything and anything I can to better my project. Whether it be reaching out to blogs/magazines, writing, recording, editing content, promoting, networking, photoshoots, etc.. they’re all small pieces of a bigger picture. It’s been very fun.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the first most impactful part of my journey was figuring out how to narrow in on what I want to say within my songs. I am very specific about my lyric writing, because it’s the part of the songs I have always been most drawn to. I think making sure I have a clear vision of what I want to say and how I want to say it is extremely important, yet fairly difficult to nail some times. The second most impactful part has been figuring out the actual musicality of each song. It’s nice to have individuality within each track, mixed with some familiarity so they’re not too similar or too different from each other. My third most impactful skill I’ve learned is the artwork and visions of my project. It’s amazing figuring out what I want the world to see me as, and what images I feel represent the emotion of the music. Color schemes and vision boards are extremely helpful with that.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for writers, musicians and other creatives to collaborate with. I typically write all songs on my own, but love the experience of finding someone and creating something special with them. I’m also looking for small blogs, safe playlisters, and any type of company or organization that helps to get music heard and discovered by their target audiences. That’s something I’m constantly on the lookout for, and really appreciative of when I find them.
