We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Delacruz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I don’t know if this is good advice but I told myself that well despite what everyone says this is what I want do and I would be unhappy if I don’t pursue this. Even if I suck at it, I will work hard to be better because it is something that brings me the most joy. No one can take that away from me no matter how much they want to me give up. It makes me happy and so I will continue to do it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a singer songwriter. Even though I do gigs where I do cover songs, my original music is Alice in Wonderland themed. I use characters from the book to express myself and events that happened in my life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Talent is only 10% while hard work is 90% of an artist. Always push yourself to do better and work on your weaker areas. 2. Make sure to allow yourself to rest. A burn out is a very hard thing to recover from. It also takes a long time to get back in the groove.
3. It’s better to get something done rather than to have an unfinished project due to perfectionism. With that, always give yourself deadlines.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Take a step back. Breath. Then Break things down to smaller tasks and don’t expect to finish everything on one day. Focus on the first few steps and not the whole mountain.
