We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Law a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My family. I am a first generation kid from Canada, whose parents worked incredibly hard for everything we had. I have a very real awareness that my parents didn’t have the same opportunities to pursue their dreams, so my work ethic comes from gratitude and the behavior that was modeled in front of me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I call myself the hyphenator aka a multi-hyphenate creative who has occupied many roles within the commercial, brand, and film industry. I took a leap of faith in 2011 and moved from Toronto to Los Angeles with a dream of working as an artist. That faith lead me to Creative Producing, Directing, Styling, Art Directing, and Consulting on projects with global brands, world renowned artists, and non-profit organizations. My mission inside of the industry is quite clear – I believe we have the power to create a value system for the mainstream and it is a responsibility I take seriously when hired as a leader.
What we produce is critically important but how we create a supportive and reputable environment is just as important.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I approach every project with a humble, respectful, and curious demeanor – which makes me stand out in an industry full of transactional interactions. I ask questions and genuinely want to garner connections with people, at every level of the project, which has proven to support my career as a trusted collaborator vs. a networker.
To carve out a path that is ‘successful’, it takes a lot of will power, determination, and a strong work ethic. Putting in the time and energy to learn from others and continuously educate yourself, is a great way to nurture your journey as an artist.
My advice is to listen, stay curious, and know it’s ok to burn bridges. Your nervous system costs more than any job.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I would live unapologetically with love, courage, and joy at the center of every decision. Period.
