Meet Jessica Love

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It’s a challenge many of us face, and it’s something that may never completely disappear. However, recognizing and acknowledging imposter syndrome is the first step toward overcoming its grip. By reframing negative thoughts, celebrating achievements, and embracing self-compassion, we can learn to navigate these feelings and regain confidence in our abilities. It’s important to remember that we are not alone in experiencing imposter syndrome, and by sharing our struggles and supporting one another, we can create a nurturing environment that empowers us to thrive despite the self-doubt. So, while imposter syndrome may linger in the background, we have the power to rise above it and continue our journey toward success and self-acceptance.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Urbane Design is a full-service interior design firm based in Austin, TX. We specialize in new home construction, remodels and furniture. Our collaborative process creates interiors that empower you to become the best version of yourself—at home and beyond.

We believe great design is more than following trends. Our team of degreed interior designers consider your lifestyle, habits and personality to create spaces that make life flow seamlessly. Whether you are building your home from the ground up or want to breathe new life into an existing space, we are able to blend styles and elements to create rooms that could only belong to you.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that had the most significant impact were education, experience, and the willingness to step out of my comfort zone and take big risks early on. Education provided me with a solid foundation and understanding of design principles, while experience allowed me to apply that knowledge and refine my skills. However, it was the willingness to embrace discomfort and take bold risks that propelled my growth and opened doors to new opportunities.

For those who are early in their journey, I would emphasize the importance of both education and experience. Continuously seek opportunities to learn and improve your craft through formal education, workshops, or online courses. Building a strong knowledge base will enhance your abilities and instill confidence in your work. Additionally, don’t underestimate the power of experience. Seek internships, entry-level positions, or volunteer opportunities to gain practical hands-on experience and expand your portfolio.

Furthermore, consider hiring a business coach or finding a mentor who can provide guidance and support. They can offer valuable insights into the industry, help you navigate challenges, and provide valuable advice on running a successful design business. Their expertise and guidance can accelerate your growth and help you avoid common pitfalls.

Remember, while having a natural eye or talent for interior design is valuable, honing your skills through education, gaining experience, and seeking guidance from experts will greatly enhance your journey and increase your chances of success. Embrace the learning process, take risks, and never stop growing as a designer.
