We recently connected with Jevon “Jerzey” Goldson and have shared our conversation below.
Jevon “Jerzey”, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is complex, you go through phases but you realize that having a business requires you to go through a process. The goal at first was to be perfect and then you realize nothing ever is. Mistakes made; are just lessons learned. I had to surround myself with people who would continuously motivate and pour wise words into me to keep going. Someone once told me comparison is the thief of all joy and that stuck with me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Jevon “Jerzey” Goldson is a NYC based creative director and performing arts pedagogue. In 2014, he founded his multifaceted studio, Lotus Creations Academy (LCA). His dedication to share, inspire, and build community is his vessel of innovation within the art world. He built a well-respected reputation as a professional choreographer, creative director, producer, serial entrepreneur, and rising filmmaker. His training consists of hip hop, contemporary dance, and other multi-cultural styles.
Choreography and dance credits include: MTV, VH1, HBO, Beyonce, Ciara, Lisa Lisa, Cassie, Vybz Kartel, Demarco, and so much more. Jerzey is an award nominated choreographer, and Guinness World Record holder. In 2018, he won MTV Live award propelling him instant notoriety as a national dancer & choreographer. Jerzey is the host of popular live shows such as ZAP Xclusive & Black Culture The Breakdown featuring some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Recently, he has put back together half of the group Mindless behavior, bringing them on a national tour called the Night Vibez USA Tour giving the fans a well deserved mindless experience. It’s their first time back together in 6 years, since their second studio album. Which caused a media frenzy which is currently going viral all over the world with over 100,000,000 impressions on social media.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three Most Important Qualities Consistency – is so important when building a brand. It defines trust with your staff and clients alike. It’s very important to make a plan and stick to it. When things go wrong find a solution, even if it means deviating from the original plan, but never give up, stay consistent and watch everyone around you get inspired and ultimately want to join you.
A positive Mindset – Goes such a long way. Even in adversity when everything seems to be going wrong just keeping positive can encourage your team to be positive which can ultimately get you out of bad situations. Negative energy spreads very quickly and it only adds to bringing more problems instead of solutions, a positive mindset can go a very long way.
Vision – You have to be able to see what you want and be able to get other people to see it and believe in it enough to buy into it. Vision is just as clear as it sounds and it’s essential in a business to know the who, what, where and why.
