We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jewel Coles & Alyssa Potter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jewel & Alyssa, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity. As a small, minority, lgbt, & women owned business, we built our brand with a mission to discover a creative and expressive hub. That hub allows us to express our creativity in many different ways. Initially, Good News Threads mainly focused on upcycling thrifted apparel by bleaching and distressing. As our brand evolved, we found ourselves in rooms with other creatives and expressing our creativity in new ways that was more than just creating clothes. Photography and videography became a huge part of our creative expression and we started sharing photos we took of other creatives and making content on social media. This led to other opportunities such as personal assistance on a Hulu documentary set and creative assistance for multiple music videos. Our key to keeping creativity alive is simple. Stay creative. If you find yourself getting bored with one way of expressing your creativity, switch it up. It doesn’t matter what media you decide to express your creativity with, but if you’re a creative at heart, then find ways to create.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are Good News Threads, founded by Jewel & Alyssa in 2020! We specialize in upcycling thrifted apparel and accessories by bleaching and distressing. We pride ourselves in being a sustainable brand that is for all people, no matter what size you wear! Aside from the clothes, Good News Threads is a creative expressive hub. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three skills that have been most impactful while building Good News Threads were consistency, being able to keep our brand branded, and staying genuine. As a small business, staying consistent with your mission and goals from the beginning of building your brand is imperative. It is a way to build your brand in your eyes, but also in the eyes of the public. Creativity is hard. Waking up everyday to choose to stay consistent is discipline and only positively can impact your brand.
Being able to keep our brand branded is a huge skill that we have developed over the years. Simple decisions that we made three years ago are still a very important part of our brand today. Things like our logo, brand colors, and image are how we are identified in the public eye! It’s what makes Good News Threads who we are.
Good News Threads is all about staying genuine. We love to make connections with the people we meet and pride ourselves on keeping our connections genuine. People love to work with good people.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are always down to collaborate with other creatives! We love to work with people who are willing to model our clothes. Experience or no experience, we would love to work with you!
We also love to create content for other creatives, which is another way we can collaborate.
We would love to work with any creatives in any capacity they see fit. Definitely willing to start conversations!
