We were lucky to catch up with Jill Pratt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Raised in a small farming town in Nebr. We learned from an earlier age that work was a must to get ahead in life. My parents both went to collage where they met. Dad’s family was form Omaha and they owned their own business, which my father worked. My mother was from a small town where she worked for her father. My dad being Irish and mom being English that was a given to work and get ahead in life. My parents supported my 2 sisters and me in anything we did. There were always there when we needed them. Our faith in Jesus help us get through heard times and has continued thru our life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have worked many jobs and enjoyed most of them. Trying different ones I have learned what I do like. After meeting George (my husband) and finding out he was very interested in horses and wanted to raise them. This was what help us to figure out what we wanted to do. Our daughter (Kris) always wanted a horse so that started thing rolling. We found property (where we are now) and asked our neighbor who was a relator if he new of any property for sale. It just happened a new listing that had just come up and not hit the multiple listing yet. So we went and looked at it and put in a bid. We were able to get it. The people that lived there boarded horses so all left except one which was a mare that was about to foal. A few nights later the mare had a foal and it was so rewarding we decided to continue boarding horses. This was a challenge for us. Not knowing much about boarding we took courses to help us learn more about building and horses. Once we started taking more horses and learning more each day lead us to breeding horses. We got our first quarter horse mare we bred and then it continued to this day. After a few years we had a friend and were talking about starting a horse rescue. So Sharron and I with our husbands started Colorado Horse Rescue. We rehabbed them on our property. I learned a lot about working with volunteers, vets, farriers and all kinds of horses. We grew fast and became a non profit organization.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The best way we learned was the hand on working with the horses and taking care of them. Also taking classes, reading and talking to other people who have been thru what we did. You are always learning new things and techniques every day.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Learning to realize you can not do it all by yourself. You need to rely on people you know can handle a job that you always did. Doing this job is your baby. You are the only one that can do it right. I have learned when you teach someone to do your job well they can do it. It has been hard to let go but have realized others can help.
