Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joey Mattina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joey, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My favorite book is the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. When I first read the book in my 20’s it left a major impression on me. If you haven’t read it, it follows a young shepherd as he goes off in search of his “personal treasure” that he saw in his dreams buried near the Egyptian pyramids. So moved by his dreams, the boy leaves his homeland of Spain and begins the long journey to Egypt (the period of this story is long before cars, trains and airplanes existed). Along the way he encounters difficulties, gets robbed, falls in love, befriends mentors, often questions if he made a mistake leaving the comfort of his home, and is nearly beaten to death. In the end, which I won’t ruin for anybody who hasn’t read the book, he does find his treasure, but it isn’t where he thought it would be.
The book eloquently reminds us that life is a journey of ups and downs, but every step along the way holds lessons for us if we choose to see them. No matter if we’re not where we want to be or if we’re not yet who we want to be – most events or circumstances in life are temporary and striving for our “personal treasure” is an adventure best experienced when we go with the flow.
With that in mind, I often take a step back from my life and ask myself at what point along my journey I am. Maybe I’m not as far along in my career as I thought I’d be; maybe I’m not as far along in a relationship as I thought I’d be; maybe I’m not living the life I imagined I would be by now, but with the shepherd in mind I can always remind myself that I am exactly where I need to be and there’s no reason to judge myself or others. Shit happens. There are unexpected turns in the road. We all change. And in the end, most things turn out better than we even expected. So have fun and enjoy life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a chiropractor that focuses on soft-tissue manipulation and holistic healing. The past 2 years of my practice I’ve been very interested in the combination of exogenous substances with bodywork as I’ve seen incredible results on not just the physical but also the mental side of disease. My focus is on getting people better as efficiently as possible and I love exploring ways to achieve that.
What I love most about what I do is the creativity and individuality that I can express through my hands with my treatment style. I use my knowledge of the body and biomechanics and combine that with my intuition to try and create an incredible experience for my patients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Quality number one is curiosity. You can do so many different things in your lifetime. You could literally have a new career every few years if you wanted to. Keep searching until you find something that sets your soul on fire, and when the fire dims, it’s ok to move on to the next spark.
Quality number two is persistence. When you do feel the fire in your belly, throw yourself in with all your energy. In the beginning, you will get discouraged and want to quit. This is a natural human experience. You have to get through the uncomfortable portion of learning a new skill until it becomes fun. Once you get past the frustrating stage, the enjoyment grows exponentially as you can feel yourself getting better and the results show.
Quality number three is patience. Great things take time. Sometimes we are on the path to our goals and an unforeseen setback means we have to wait another few months or years until we reach our goal. I’ve learned that even when things seem impossible, they almost all work out over time and situations I thought would never end just faded away never to be thought of again.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Full circle moment here. The Alchemist has so many nuggets of wisdom throughout. It’s a book I re-read once per year just as a reminder of the powerful lessons it teaches. The most important nugget of wisdom in the book for me is to keep my energy focused on my mission and purpose and everything that happens along the way is just a bonus experience or something to learn from. Don’t take yourself too seriously, you’ll get to where you’re going, even if you don’t know yet where that is.
