Meet John E. Kelly

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John E. Kelly. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John E. below.

John E., we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Feeling self-confidence can be a lifelong process. I was very fortunate to have parents who loved and nurtured me throughout my childhood that set a strong foundation from which I was able to build upon.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I began my career in photography with an emphasis in food advertising, and I continue to work with wonderful people and companies by helping them create a look that’s perfectly suited to their company and products.

Today, my primary focus is my fine art photography images. My body of work spans decades, and I’m even more excited about shooting my personal work than I was when I first started. I really do love the feeling I get from creating my own images from the world around me. I’m equally comfortable photographing in the studio as I am on location, so my work represents my interests in various forms such as still life, landscape, abstract, street, and travel.

My images have been published and shown worldwide and I have received numerous awards for my work. My fine art photography is now available for purchase through my web gallery.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First off, I was blessed with a talent plain and simple. I’ve had an eye for photography since I was a child taking pictures with a B&W Polaroid camera. It’s in my blood.

Secondly, I was determined to make photography my career and be successful at it. I knew it was what I wanted, and I was willing to do whatever I needed to make it happen. To me, it felt like there was no other alternative.

Lastly, I love the technology that goes with creating images. Cameras, lenses, computers, paper, ink, printing etc… It’s all part of the process and it’s incredibly exciting for me.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I think my parents recognized not only my interest in photography, but also my talent in it as well. Even though neither one of them were artists themselves, they encourage me to pursue my dream by supporting me through art college and helping me at the beginning of my career.
