Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jojo Trumbly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jojo, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This is something that I talk about often with other business owners. To be candid, I am not sure that I have quite “overcame” this yet. There are some days that I think…wait a second…how did I get HERE? The best way that I combat those negative thoughts in my head is just to look around the room. Look at all the people who you brought up with you. My success is their success. They trusted me enough to support my business and I trusted them to be apart of my journey and we collectively have taken ourselves further than I could have ever gone alone. The best way to dismiss the imposter thoughts are just to remember, I deserve this. I worked so hard for it, we all have. Surrounding yourself with people who will remind you of the best version of yourself. That has really helped me develop a better sense of self and kept me going forward when the clouds of doubt creep in.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been working with an elite group of business owners in the North Houston area for the past 3 years. Together we created The NET Level Up Networking. This began at the beginning of the pandemic. We were all apart of another networking group when the pandemic completely shut down meetings. At the time, I was the president of that chapter, so whenever the company itself shut down…I kept our chapter going. As far as I was concerned, we still had bills to pay and life to live, so nevertheless we persisted. During the rest of 2020 we kept meeting through zoom and created our own community of entrepreneurs. We were not only colleagues but soon became fast friends. Experiencing the shared trauma of the pandemic, losing people, members gave birth to new ones (including myself!)…it really brought us all closer together. By the end of 2020 The NET Level Up Networking was born. I wanted to create our own company that reflected the high standards that we hold one another to, as well as a culture and community of leaders who have a space to be themselves and ask the hard questions about business. We all became a resource to one another, their success was my success and vise versa. It has been an absolute honor to facilitate the brilliant minds and conversations that we have had in The NET.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There are so many skills involved in founding, running and leading a business…many of which I am still learning to master. In no order of importance, here are the three that have really attributed to the success of my company. The first one being how to have a conversation and connect with someone. When you are networking, you have to know how to talk to people…which sounds simple, but it most certainly is not. Conversations are very layered. One must be aware of their body language and the way that they come off to others. As well as being aware of their body language, when you ask a question if they cross their arms or furrow their eyebrows then you might have picked a sensitive topic and you need to know how to change the conversation quickly and effortlessly. How to look people in the eyes when you speak or are being spoken to. Do not ask yes or no questions, really get to know the person and asking thoughtful questions so that they open up to you. If you are dominating the conversation then that other person might not feel as connected to you. There are so many nuances to conversating! The second equally important skill is how to learn to say “I need help.” delegate delegate delegate. You are not the end all be all in every skill for everything. Nobody can run a business by themselves. Ask for help when you need it. Know WHO to ask for help from, not everyone wants to help you. Surround yourselves with people who WANT to see you succeed. Thirdly, is to be flexible. Be flexible when the punches of life come your way. Do not let a bad situation permeate into everything you’re doing. To be flexible when your business grows and you have to let more people in to continue the trajectory of success. Any leader that can be flexible and listen to their colleagues will have a loyal following.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
The NET Level Up Networking is always looking for business owners and local entrepreneurs to collaborate with. We have a membership based program that is industry specific in which you meet with others once a month to work together and bring up your business. Our three pillars of success are building, growing, serving. You have to build yourself up personally, such as your mental health and your family and home. Then you can grow your business because you have that foundation of sense of self. Once your business is growing to a higher level you can serve the community that has trusted your business to serve them. We are all about inspiring leaders and creating opportunities for people to be their best selves. We lean on one another when times are hard and we need to continue to grow our businesses. The NET also goes out into the community and serves the people who have carried us to this point. Without the community, we would not have the success that we do. The types of people we want to collaborate with is anyone who holds themselves to high standards and is ready to level up your network.
