We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan Butler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Through my work ethic, as an artist when I started like anyone I looked up to the greats and mainstream artists and expected those same results. Quickly you get humbled and understand that you can’t just get that overnight success. I view music like going to the gym daily; you have time put work in to see the results and once you know you’ve put the work in the confidence and self-esteem come together naturally.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Pop Rap artist that focuses on themes surrounding heartbreak and toxic relationships. What’s special to me when I speak on these topics is I can provide the male perceptive; we often hear one side of the story but not often do we have the male perspective and open up to express our emotions through song. Being true to myself has opened new opportunities to go on Tour with Jacquees and Fredo Bang as a supporting artist for the upcoming “Bangman Tour”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency, discipline, and ability to study. Just like anything else in life without putting work in and becoming 1% better every day you’ll never reach the heights you want to. You can’t be in this industry without disciple whether that be your budget, setting time to write, record or just having an overall release plan; everything you do is calculated. That flows into the last point which is the ability to study; music is always changing so to know and understand your favorite artits writing techniques, understanding aspects of music theory if not all of it, learning every facet of the game if you don’t commit to it on that level you’re telling yourself this isn’t what I want.
The advice I’d give someone early in the journey is to set realistic goals for the month and achieve small daily goals that relate to your craft. If you write a hook a day you will master harmonies and melodies, your writing skills will improve, and all from just one achievable daily goal; that’s just a small example.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking forward to working with major artists Jacquees speaking about a feature in the upcoming months. Also the producer 2-Tone for all the beats on the upcoming project. I prefer and require to work with people who have three main characteristics. The first is passion; I want to know you’re all in the same way I am so it’s no confusion why we are working to get as close to perfect as we can. The second is honesty; the music industry can be unforgiving but if you can be transparent about what you have going on it makes the work much more effortless. Lastly, is enjoyable; it’s work and passion meeting at the end of the day but the laughs, jokes, and journey to get to the results are just as important as the final results.
If you want to collaborate the best way to connect me is through Instagram. I like to meet face-to-face and have conversations before we dive into work.
