We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Limon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
Jonathan, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
How have you overcome or persisted despite the challenges related to mental health issues?
Being an entrepreneur working in different entities can at times get overwhelming. I always have to remind myself what I’m working towards and why. Overcoming obstacles, hitting roadblocks, and getting criticized can always challenge your motivation, creating doubt. Since high school, I’ve always been involved with art and music and have always had to deal with people criticizing my work, rejection and negligence. Friends would not support me which led to my solo journey. I took it upon myself to learn every step of the process. This added layers of learning, trial and error, and figuring out things on my own a lot. I didn’t grow up in a great environment and being one of 6 children to immigrant parents in poverty felt like I lacked a lot of resources when it came to outsourcing and a lot of invisible walls in front of me.
As an adult, I deal with high levels of stress, anxiety, and some depression. I work through these issues through therapy, self meditation, and taking mental health days to myself where I can recharge my energy. I found it very important to listen to your body when it’s asking for rest. When you don’t, you tend to overwork and burn yourself out, making you lose that motivation that once carried you. Having to build up that motivation and confidence again always feels like a major setback. Had I known what I do now and how to manage these challenges with mental health, I feel I would have been further down my path than where I currently am. It’s felt like I’ve had to start over numerous times. It’s like trying to heal a wound that you keep picking at, it just takes longer to heal and scar. I still have my dark days where I feel drained, get stuck on a mental block, or get lost in a pool of negative thoughts. It’s a challenge within myself that I struggle with every day, only now I know how to regulate it and accept those bad traits and work with them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
To those who are unfamiliar with me and what I do, I go by Limon. I’m an artist and entrepreneur. I work in real estate sales, JLimon Realty. Licensed in Arizona for 5 years now, I work with first time buyers and latinos to provide them options in buying their first home. I also work with homeowners who are looking to sell their current property in order to grow into a bigger home or downsize, whichever the reason may be.
I am also a photographer, JLimon Visualz, and a musician. I have been involved mainly around the music and photography industry for several years now. Starting my journey off as a musician releasing my own music, I wanted to get an idea of what it’s like to collaborate with others as I was a solo artist coming from Somerton, AZ to the big city. I started working in radio promotions for a few years, which exposed me to a lot of what’s happening in the city with the local scene. Learning the ins and outs and different forms of art people take on, I absorbed as much knowledge as I could. Fast forward to 2023, I took a leap into the world of photography so I can build my own brand. I shoot lots of self-portraits, specializing in portrait photography and landscapes. I’m also beginning my ventures into real estate photography and videography in the Spring. My objective is to help small business owners or other artists build an image for their brands. I want to help individuals in bringing their ideas to life.
I got into photography because I wanted to utilize it to my advantage and bring my art and music to life. I unexpectedly took a detour and explored the realm of what it takes to be a great photographer, which is how I got to where I am now building myself around my camera. To have full creative control of my ideas is a blessing, and I want to provide my services to others to help them in accomplishing the same.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I feel some important qualities that help me in reaching my goals involved around my persistence, drive, and motivation. Relentlessly working and practicing helped me stay focused and dedicated to learning the craft as an expert photographer, helping me gain the skills needed faster than expected when it came to learning. There was so much behind the scenes work to be done in order to accomplish reaching my final work. I feel I have reached a level of satisfaction with my work and have found a style that fits me.
One skill that I will attest to helping me heavily on my journey is project management. I learned so much about project management while attending school in 2022 at ASU, having a full class around the subject. It was extremely interesting to me to learn about the subject and learn how to apply to my day to day work activities when it came to initiating my shoot, planning, executing, and closing my project shoot.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth and improvement in the last 12 months would have to be with my personal development. Being aware of what I’m capable of accomplishing has been one of the biggest areas of growth for me. Sometimes as humans, we tend to limit our abilities or let outside opinions get to us and we feel we are not capable of reaching our goals. Learning how to ignore others’ opinions of what they think of your work, especially when they have not walked down the path you are traveling on, has been an obstacle that i’ve learned to get over. I don’t believe in holding anybody back. I like to see people succeed, and when others express their excitement for watching me do what I do just boosts my confidence more and motivates me to keep at it. Discipline is a strong key in success, you have to remind yourself of your end goal and what you’re working towards. The path to get there is the only thing you need to figure out during the process. I personally feel I have learned how to use so many tools in the last year, especially with photography. If you were to ask me a year ago where I saw myself with my camera, it was definitely not where I am now.
