We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jorge Ameer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jorge , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
There’s been many ocassions when I’ve been “the only one in the room” – and this started from small. I was the only one in the room obsessed with movies from a very young age, so much so that my mother would drop me off at the movie theatre as soon as the cinema opened and she would pick me up after the last show. I would go on movie marathons when I was in my early teens not realizing this would prepare me for a career in film now as a grown man I go to the some of the biggest film festivals in the world scouting for the best films for acquisitions. Scouting for films, you have to have the movie marathon mentality like I did when I was young. Watching movies all day, all night and still keeping the passion of watching every movie as if it was your first.
Now that we are in 2024 and on the eve of nominations of the 2024 Oscars, it’s a good time to talk about how I got to be one of the 265 eligible films for best picture amongst 265 of the worlds greatest films of 2023 vying for Best Picture at 2024 OSCARS.
It’s been a long journey of being the only one in the room. It’s all starts with what others may be too scared to start or may have too many trepidations standing in their way to make things happen.
Being the only one in the room is a story of resilience, of determination and of keeping oneself relevant in order to continue making strives.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My latest achievements include co-executive producing, directing and editing my latest film “Altered Perceptions” written by Neuropsychologist Dr. Wayne Dees. This sci-fi/horror story based on our current political climate is a cautionary tale about what happens when we let folks on the fringes of the policial spectrum make life altering desicions concerning our daily living and the dire consequences that goes with it.
It’s a supernatural story and also a film that has won multiple awards in the film festival circuit since having its world premiere at the Festival De Cannes.
It’s a story that will make you wanna watch the film several times because you’ll need that many viewings to decipher what’s actually happening.
Altered Perceptions opened in theatres fall 2023 and ,as of writing of this interview, is amongst the 265 eligible films for Best Picture for the 2024 Oscars which is quite an honor because it’s part of a very small group from which ultimately the nominees and Oscar winners will be chosen.
We cannot take for granted that this is from thousand of films released from around the world so it is a distinct achievement to be within these films competing for Oscars.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities or skills to have while pursuing a career in entertainment is talent, determination/perseverance and discipline. Talent because without it you can’t develop greatness.
Determination/perseverance because you will always need this as your engine to success . By never giving up or faltering in your plans you are guaranteed to have results. You can’t have desired results without trying. Also, You may have to keep doing and creating and failing many times at many attempts prior to reaching desired success.
Discipline is what will help you remain focused as you seek a desired outcome.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always on the lookout for great talent, sponsors and brand/business owners who would like to participate in the making of my films because film is forever. Talent – always looking for good actors. If maybe at a film festival by watching a film or at a play/show. I’m always in a quest to seek good talent to collaborate with.
Sponsors can come in many forms. From financial contributions to product/services. Making a movie nowadays take a little bit of all three. There are people out there with the financial means to make their ideas into film, but don’t know how to go about it. If it’s something that aligns with our interests, I can help make your movie happen.
If you have a service you’d like to promote and or facility, it maybe a hotel, resort location or an interesting immersive experience that you would like to see on film, those are the opportunities I’m always on the look out for. If you own picturesque lands, or venues that may be perfect for capturing a cinematic experience, do not hesitate to send me your service, brand or whatever you do. Do you own a cruise?, a fair?, do you create haunted houses for Halloween?. Opportunities come in different packages.
I’ve been approached by mom and pop retreats/resorts those make the best venues to use as backdrops for movies and to tell my stories.
Do you own a restaurant with a unique type of cuisine where we could feature our actors navigating the culinary experience whether eating there or showcasing the space, there are so many possibilities. Reach out on my Instagram Jorge Ameer – DM me it’s the easiest way to approach me.
