We were lucky to catch up with JOSEPH NYAGAH recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JOSEPH, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
What a great question! Being the only one in the room who looks like me can be challenging, but there are some strategies that have helped me:
1.You have to learn to embrace your uniqueness: Recognize that your differences are strengths, not weaknesses. Your diverse perspective can bring valuable insights to the table.
2. You have to prepare thoroughly: By being confident in your abilities and knowledge. Research and extensive preparation can ensure you’re well-equipped to contribute meaningfully.
3. Speak up: Don’t be afraid to share your thoughts and opinions. Your voice matters, and your contributions can enrich the conversation.
4. By building alliances: Seek out supportive colleagues and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Having a network of allies can help you feel less isolated.
5. Embrace your individuality and don’t try to conform. Celebrate your unique background, culture, and experiences – they are a source of strength and inspiration. As a proud immigrant from Kenya, my Kenyan accent is a badge of honor that represents my rich cultural heritage and the experiences that have shaped me.
Remember, being the only one in the room can be an opportunity to shine and make a positive impact. By embracing your uniqueness and being confident in your abilities, you can thrive and be a role model for others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Based on my journey, I believe the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful are:
1. Growing up in a small Kenyan town, I learned to be resilient and adaptable from a young age. Walking barefoot to school was just one of the challenges I faced, but it taught me to bounce back and adjust to changing circumstances. These skills have been invaluable in my journey. To develop resilience, I recommend prioritizing self-care, learning from failures, and cultivating a growth mindset. By embracing these practices, you’ll be better equipped to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and determination.
2. Strong Communication Skills: Effective communication has been essential in building strong relationships, resolving conflicts, and conveying my vision. To improve communication skills, I suggest practicing active listening, seeking feedback, and being open to constructive criticism.
3. Strategic Thinking and Problem-Solving: The ability to think critically and strategically has helped me navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions. To develop strategic thinking, I recommend seeking out mentorship, practicing scenario planning, and staying up-to-date with industry trends.
My advice for those early in their journey is to:
* Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth
* Seek out mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals
* Practice self-reflection and continuous learning
* Focus on building strong relationships and networks
* Stay adaptable and open to change.
. Learn to be patient and slow to anger, and try not to make decisions when you’re upset.
Remember, your journey is unique, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Keep learning, growing, and pushing forward!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
