We recently connected with Josh J. Holm and have shared our conversation below.
Josh J. , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
One of my favorite quotes that I’ve kept close over the years is “Freedom is on the other side of discipline.” To me self discipline is found in the everyday hustle and dedication to your craft. On hard days I imagine myself living in the moments I’ve dreamed about for so long, then I put my head down and get back to work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Josh J. Holm and I’m the founder and Creative director of Castles & Queens. A second year brand based in Los Angeles. Last year we had the chance to debut at New York Fashion Week as well as earlier this year at Milan Fashion Week. Next month the brand will begin to stock at global luxe retailer based in London, New York, and Los Angeles.
I spent my early days after fashion school interning in different ateliers in Los Angeles. During these times I learned the basics of design and production which then transitioned me into when starting the brand. The dream is to keep expanding into a global presence while paying tributes to our Los Angeles roots.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say work on your gifts and talents. If you don’t know something, learn it. Talent will open doors for you. Then work on your humility and character, because that’s what keeps you in the rooms you’ve opened. And be your number one fan. In the early days you’ll often be lonely with nobody to fall back on. Remind yourself why you’re doing this and that your dream is possible.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Self-growth has been a predominant focus for myself and the brand. Training my mental mindset and daily routine into habits of self discipline, I know will prove wonders for my artistic and professional career. As a designer and artist I want to be always growing and learning in my craft.
