We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joyce Akwe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joyce below.
Joyce, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me can present unique challenges, but it’s also an opportunity to showcase my strengths and abilities. Here are some strategies I’ve learned to be effective and successful in such situations: Avoid thinking of me. I focus on the task that is ahead of me not on me. I also try to focus on ideas, directions, and why we are in that room in the first place. I ensure I go to the table prepared.
I arm myself with knowledge and I go in prepared. I stay informed about my field or industry and am ready to contribute meaningfully to discussions. Preparation builds confidence and ensures you can hold your own in any situation.
Confidence in myself and my abilities is key. I embrace my uniqueness and the perspective it brings to the table. I prepare and believe in my worth and the value I bring to any conversation or situation.
Effective communication is essential, especially when I am the only one who looks like me in the room. I clearly articulate my ideas, thoughts, and opinions. I am concise, confident, and assertive while also being open to listening to others.
I build relationships and networks both within and outside my immediate circles. Connecting with like-minded individuals can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities for growth. I seek out communities where I feel supported and valued.
I understand I may encounter bias or stereotypes at times. I have developed resilience to overcome these challenges. I focus on my goals, stay true to myself, and I don’t let negative experiences deter me from pursuing my dreams. I focus on the positive experiences I encounter every single day.
I try to always lead by example and as a role model for others who may feel marginalized or underrepresented. Success knows no boundaries and diversity strengthens teams and organizations.
By embracing my uniqueness, staying confident, and continuously honing my skills, I can thrive and excel even when I am the only one in the room who looks like you.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My objective is to empower individuals grappling with chronic medical conditions by furnishing comprehensive insights into their ailments, guiding them on self-care practices, elucidating potential prognoses, and imparting strategies for preempting exacerbations or hospitalizations. I accomplish this through the dissemination of medical expertise, tailored to facilitate the flourishing of individuals contending with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular ailments, strokes, and heart failure, among others.
Furthermore, I derive gratification from nurturing the development of aspiring medical scholars, by offering guidance to young medical students to navigate their journey in medicine and excel in their professional endeavors. Additionally, I extend mentorship to middle and high school students, aiding them in discovering their life trajectories and assisting pre-medical students in charting a clear course toward achieving their aspirations in the realm of medicine.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to adversity, and persevere in the face of challenges is crucial for success in life. Resilient individuals are better equipped to navigate obstacles, maintain a positive outlook, and continue progressing towards their goals.
Cultivate resilience by reframing failures as opportunities for growth, maintaining a balanced perspective on setbacks, and practicing self-care to bolster your mental and emotional well-being. Develop coping strategies such as mindfulness, problem-solving skills, and seeking support from friends, family, or mentors.
Critical Thinking: Critical thinking involves analyzing information, evaluating evidence, and making reasoned judgments or decisions. It enables individuals to solve problems effectively, make sound choices, and navigate complex situations with clarity and discernment.
Sharpen your critical thinking skills by questioning assumptions, seeking multiple perspectives, and actively engaging with diverse ideas and viewpoints. Practice evaluating the reliability and validity of information, and cultivate a habit of logical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making.
Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence encompasses the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions, as well as effectively navigate interpersonal relationships and empathize with others’ feelings and perspectives.
Enhance your emotional intelligence by cultivating self-awareness through introspection and reflection, practicing emotional regulation techniques such as mindfulness and deep breathing, and actively seeking to understand the emotions and needs of others. Develop empathy by listening attentively, validating others’ experiences, and expressing empathy through supportive gestures and actions.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
One of my parents’ most significant contributions to my life was their unwavering commitment to nurturing and providing me with the highest caliber of education possible. Their dedication to fostering my growth, imparting essential values, and instilling a thirst for knowledge have been instrumental in shaping my journey thus far and continue to serve as pillars of support in my daily endeavors.
