Juan, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
Growing up in Los Angeles in the 80’s to 90s as a child raised by a single mother and grandmother presented its fair share of challenges. Without a true father figure in my life, I had to learn self-discipline at an early age.
My mother and grandmother worked tirelessly to provide for our family, but their demanding schedules meant I had to take responsibility for my own actions and decisions. I quickly learned the importance of setting goals and staying focused, as there was no one else to guide me through the complexities of life.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding the motivation to excel academically. With limited resources and a lack of parental involvement due to their work commitments, I had to rely on my own self-discipline to stay dedicated to my studies. I developed a routine that included setting aside time each day to complete my homework, studying diligently, and seeking help when needed.
Beyond academics, I also had to navigate the temptations and pitfalls of a bustling city like Los Angeles. The absence of a strong male role model made it crucial for me to make wise choices and resist negative influences. It took a great deal of self-discipline to avoid the allure of drugs, gangs, and other destructive behaviors that were prevalent in my neighborhood.
In my journey, I learned to lean on my own inner strength and developed a strong sense of self-discipline with work ethics. I realized that my future success depended on my ability to stay focused, work hard, and persevere. While the absence of a true father figure created challenges, it also taught me the value of self-reliance and the power of self-discipline.
Through the years, I’ve come to appreciate the lessons learned during my upbringing. My experiences have shaped me into a resilient individual who knows the importance of setting goals, staying disciplined, and making the most of the opportunities that come my way. I have learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and strive to be the best version of myself, even when faced with adversity.
Overall, being raised by a single mother and grandmother in LA without a father figure fostered a strong sense of self-discipline within me. While it was not always easy, the challenges I encountered have only strengthened my resolve to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals.

Over the past 23 years, my professional career has revolved around the transportation and crossdock forklift operations industry. It has been an exciting journey filled with diverse experiences and valuable insights. For the majority of my career, I have been associated with a large national LTL trucking company, based in Salt Lake City, but with its headquarters in North Carolina.
For the last 7 years, I have embraced the role of a regional business intelligence analyst within this company. This position has allowed me to utilize my analytical skills to gather and interpret data, providing valuable insights and strategic recommendations to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making. It has been a rewarding role, enabling me to contribute to the company’s growth and success.
Beyond my professional endeavors, I have a deep passion for racing and riding in UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) across the beautiful landscapes of Utah. The thrill of speed and the breathtaking scenery combine to create unforgettable experiences that I cherish.
In 2020, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by starting Haul’n Bins Mini Dumpsters as a side hustle. What began as a small venture has now grown to operate in three counties, providing residential customers with nearly 40 containers for waste management. Managing this business has been both challenging and rewarding, as I’ve been able to offer a valuable service to the community while gaining firsthand experience in running and growing a successful enterprise.
Throughout my career and personal endeavors, I have consistently sought growth, diversity, and the opportunity to make a positive impact. My experience in transportation and crossdock forklift operations, coupled with my role as a business intelligence analyst, has provided me with a well-rounded skill set and a strong foundation for my entrepreneurial pursuits. I look forward to continued growth and making a difference in the transportation industry and beyond.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My three qualities that have helped me persevere in being consistent and determined to win and conquer daily pressures in and outside my life, as well as in business, can be summarized as follows:
Passion: I firmly believe that having a passion for what I feel is right and what aligns with my journey has been instrumental in my perseverance. Initially, passion may start as a choice or a task, but over time, it can develop and consume me. It becomes something I think about daily, even though it may require a significant investment of time and effort. Despite the challenges that may arise, my passion keeps me going and provides the motivation I need to overcome obstacles.
Commitment: I have learned the importance of commitment, whether it is towards a person or a job. When I commit to something or someone, I give it my all. In today’s world, where knowledge is readily available, people are less concerned with what you say or do and more focused on how you make them feel. By staying committed to the people I interact with or the tasks at hand, I strive to create positive experiences and leave a lasting impression.
Family: I value and cherish the importance of family. I understand the significance of breaking any generational curses through empathy and embracing the relationships I have with my loved ones. When it comes to my family, I give my all and provide them with everything I have. I recognize that time passes quickly, especially when it comes to children growing up, so I make it a priority to invest my energy and resources into building a strong and loving family unit.
These three qualities—passion, commitment, and family—have shaped my journey and helped me persevere through the daily pressures of life and business. By staying true to my passions, remaining committed to my goals and relationships, and prioritizing the well-being of my family, I have been able to maintain consistency and determination in the pursuit of success.
