Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Juan Re Crivello. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Juan , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Four years ago I founded Masticadores.com, as a non-profit organization (NGO) with the aim of it being a debate and communication tool that would allow new or little-known writers to be known.
My purpose arose when I was 10 years old and my Italian grandmother had a garage full of books. But there was a complete Reader Digest collection from the 1950s. That period disappeared until I discovered my editor spirit a little before I retired. Later
Masticadores would become what it is today, 16 blogs in 10 countries and 7 languages and visited by 400,000 readers a year.
And today my purpose is a reality.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I live in a small city of 70,000 inhabitants next to the sea and half an hour from Barcelona. Vilanova i La Geltrú also has the characteristic that it has a carnival that is one of the oldest in Spain. In my daily life, as a writer, every day I publish an article and then I edit Masticadores.com, a digital magazine made up of 16 specialized blogs and 12 editors. My task is to coordinate the editors, generate content from the more than 300 writers and promote aspects of the magazine that make it original, independent and respectful of different forms of opinion. When I finish my homework in Masticadores, around 12, I like to have a coffee on one of the best-known streets (with open-air bars) and enjoy the pulse of the city.
Masticadores, in addition to being published in 10 countries, is a tower of Babel, since we publish in the languages: Spanish, English, Italian, Romanian, French, Portuguese and now we will open Masticadores Philippines, where we will publish in the Tagalog language.
I really enjoy my work, it is an atmosphere of clear global influence but with local writers who explain their ways of seeing life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Sometimes when I look back, around 2010, I opened a blog (which has already had more than a million readers) and went to a coach to work on my writing style. There began this long journey until 2024. On these long itineraries, one delimits and polishes their way of working and communicating. In my case, three characteristics define me: perseverance, creative freedom that leads me to discover different approaches every day, and being the one who leads the way without fear. With this I could not have gotten here, there is one aspect that I have developed and that is working as a team. This was given to me by Masticadores.com and the 12 editors. They are the soul with nuances, and different currents and languages on which I rely. Giving advice to those starting out is complicated. If one does so perhaps one considers that one has already reached the end of one’s path. This is not my case, but if there is something that should determine any writer or communicator, it is to cultivate his style even in the baddest or most dramatic moments.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Well, perhaps the nuance would be, during a time when my parents divorced I was educated (and lived with them) with my two Italian grandmothers (Domenica and Francesca). Of different characteristics. Domenica taught me to discover the oral stories and dreams of Italy, north of Turin. The valleys and mountains where she was born. My grandmother Francisca (from the north of Cuneo), in turn, was the one with whom I spoke about culture and politics, and where I read the Bible in 10 illustrated volumes and was able to participate in the fascinating stories of the exile of the Jews from Egypt, which represented For me, reading a modern comic.
