We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My Dad honestly. All throughout my childhood my dad was the perfect example of someone who was always giving and not asking or expecting anything in return. I remember one time during Christmas, we heard a family didn’t have much to get gifts or anything for their kids and so my Dad went shopping, we bought tons of toys and clothes and stuffed them in a black trash bag and then to top it all off, we drove to their house and left the bag of toys with a note that said merry Christmas and Jesus loves you. Oh and we left the trash bag of toys in the car and then drove off in the other car. But that was just one special moment I will never forget cause it taught me when you have more than enough, share with someone who might need it more than you. I’m thankful for that lesson early on in my childhood.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I do country music mainly with a splash of pop and rock elements. I also have a publishing deal where I write songs to get recorded by artists, both known and upcoming. I currently am working on songs for my upcoming EP project to be released by around the summer of this year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Oh goodness. The first one is huge in Nashville and just in general. It’s not really what you do, it’s who you know. So once I got to town I started going out to every event I could to meet others and just get lost in the chaos of networking. The beauty of that is I created great friendships and even some of those became songwriting collaborations, which also goes into the second thing. Collaboration is key, competition isn’t me. I love creating with others. I tell people if you want to create together than get to know me before asking me to write. If you take time to hear my story and share yours then usually you create a relationship that, once you get in the writing room you can’t go wrong. I love that. Lastly, leave your egos at home in the eggo box. The last one is pretty self explanatory. Haha!
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Oh goodness, so I am an entertainer and one thing I know about most is we are high energy and all over the place, which makes it hard to sometimes stay focused on something specific. Like, I get lost in the chaos of going out networking even still today. It excites me so much when I go see my friends and support them chasing their dreams, but sometimes I need to remain home where I can do things needed to better my health, my thoughts, my social media, my mind and my spirit to then help me stay focused on the task I should be doing in that moment, whether it be a writing session coming up or a demo. I Just got to do my best to keep myself from getting off track and simply…focus!
