We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kala Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kala, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose as an interior designer has been a journey shaped by passion, experiences, and a deep connection to the art of creating chic spaces. It all began with a genuine love for design and the impact it has on people’s lives.
Early on, I found myself captivated by the ability of well-designed spaces to evoke emotions, enhance functionality, and reflect individuality. Exploring various design disciplines and styles has allowed me to find my niche and cater to clients seeking exclusive, high-end design solutions.
Throughout my educational and professional journey, I sought opportunities to immerse myself in diverse projects and collaborate with clients who had unique visions. These experiences provided a platform for continuous learning and growth, helping me refine my design philosophy and approach.
In essence, my purpose as an interior designer is continually evolving, shaped by each project, client interaction, and the ever-changing scope of design trends. It is rooted in the belief that design is not just about aesthetics but about crafting experiences that enhance the quality of life for those who inhabit the spaces I create.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Certainly. As a sophisticated and modern-styled interior designer, my work is centered around the principles of harmony, balance, and minimalism. I am passionate about creating spaces that not only look visually appealing but also evoke a sense of tranquility and balance for the occupants.
What I find most exciting and special about my design approach is the focus on tailored simplicity and the elegant use of space. Minimalism, to me, is not merely an aesthetic choice but a way of life. It involves careful consideration of each element, ensuring that it contributes to the overall harmony of the space. The excitement lies in the challenge of achieving a perfect balance between form and function, where every design decision serves a purpose.
Harmony is a guiding principle in my work, influencing everything from color palettes, furniture arrangements to spatial planning. I believe that a harmonious space has the power to positively impact one’s well-being, fostering a sense of calm and order. This is especially important in the modern world, where simplicity is often a welcomed relief from the complexities of daily life.
My brand is built on the idea that less is more. I aim to create environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, up-scale and timeless. I believe in the longevity of design, and my tailored and modern approach ensures that the spaces I create stand the test of time, remaining relevant and stylish for years to come.
At Minima, we also offer E-Design services. E-Design is a modern approach to interior design that harnesses the power of technology to create stunning spaces remotely. It’s a convenient and accessible way to bring professional design expertise into your home, no matter where you are.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I have found that there are three skills that have been most impactful: creativity, communication and overall knowledge of design. Creativity is the heart of interior design. It’s not simply about choosing colors and arranging furniture; instead, it involves envisioning possibilities, thinking outside the box, and creating unique solutions for each space. Effective communication is crucial in understanding clients’ requirements and translating them into practical design concepts. Lastly, having a solid understanding of design software, knowledge of materials, and technical expertise in space planning are essential to bringing design concepts to life. Technical proficiency ensures that your designs are not only visually pleasing but also functional and feasible.
For designers at the beginning of their careers, my suggestion is to maintain an open attitude towards learning. The design field is dynamic and demands continuous learning for success. Embrace opportunities like workshops and courses, and maintain a curious mindset. The more knowledge you gain, the more adaptable and well-informed your designs will become.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, I’m always open to collaborating with creative individuals who share a passion for elevating spaces. I believe that collaborative efforts bring diverse perspectives and enhance the overall design process.
I’m interested in partnering with talented artists and skilled artisans who’d like to contribute unique pieces to complement my designs. Whether it’s bespoke furniture, custom artwork, or handcrafted decor, collaborations that blend design and craftsmanship are very exciting!
Collaborating with architects and builders allows for a holistic approach to design. Together, we can seamlessly integrate architecture and interior design to create cohesive and harmonious spaces. I value collaborations that consider both the external and internal aspects of a project.
