We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kanisha Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kanisha, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
When you have resilience, you harness the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge, such as a job loss, an illness, a disaster or a loved one’s death. If you lack resilience, you might dwell on problems, feel victimized, become overwhelmed or turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse, eating disorders or risky behaviors.
I got my resilience from the ability to adapt to difficult situations. When stress, adversity or trauma strikes, you still experience anger, grief and pain, but for me I was able to keep functioning. I improved my resilience by focusing on self more , learning from my past experiences, and NEVER GIVING UP.
God is great!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Being an entrepreneur can sometimes be a tough cookie. During the whole process of being and entrepreneur I was a full time student graduating with my Associates & Bachelors in Criminal Justice, and Masters in Public Administration. All while being a full time mom. Some look at me something like “Super Woman” because I make it look so easy. It’s not. In fact it don’t get easier. The key goal is to just keep on going and never surrender. When I first got into the business industry I was selling shades. I wanted to invest in more money so I looked into selling hair and with surprise it took off. I’ve been in the hair business for 5 years now. Many times I wanted to throw in the towel, but that’s the easy route. In life you have to keep pushing no matter what is thrown at you. I will always keep my hair brand Kay Collection XXII alive. That is where it all started.
Further more, I’m now an owner operator of Certified Trucking & Dispatching LLC. Getting into the trucking field was something different for me, but I’m glad I made this investment. I now have one dispatcher for the company and two drivers. I’m grateful to experience this journey and also excited for the expansion of my company. With faith and grace I believe my businesses will continue to prosper and expand more & more!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were most impactful to my journey would be having a positive attitude, being calm when things go wrong, and willing to learn in life. There’s never too much knowledge you can take in ever. Another impactful quality I must add is resilience. Having resilience is the same as having Self-control.
The best advice I can give for those that are early in their journey is to take heed to these qualities. Utilize every key point to be great and learn all that you can in life/business industry. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I simply just pray. I pray through everything. The good, the bad, or the ugly. My best advice to anyone would be to pray always and take some time out for self-care.
