We were lucky to catch up with Kanithea Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kanithea, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome….What an interesting idea… Here is what I know…I show up as me in every room I walk in to. There is no place that I am invited to that I do not feel like I belong. I am confident In me and the magical ideas I bring to the table. If I’m in the room, Im suppose to be there. They need me and my ideas at the table. Period.
That being said, I do what I do. Im not operating outside of my ministry. I learn everything I can learn about my craft and approach things that I don’t know, or haven’t mastered yet, with a collaborative learning spirit. I am never too wise to sit at the foot of a more knowledgable person and learn from them. Humility is a gift. I am reminded of a quote by Dr. Maya Angelou, “I come as one, but I stand as 10k”. When I walk in that room I carry everyone with me. The teachers, the experiences, the failures, the 10k hours of work and the magic of my ancestors. We are all walking in that room together, ready to create and contribute to the new ideas that are being formed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a storyteller. I make stuff up, It’s one of my favorite things to do. I am an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker. I am an author with a book in over 23 countries (Butch: Never Judge a Butch By Her Cover). I have helped other indie authors get their work out there as well. Being willing to help others with their dreams opens the door for my dreams to be realized. I just launched my new venture, QFN TV, which is a new OTT direct to consumer streaming platform that can be found in over 170 countries and in 40+ million homes.
The thing that sets me apart is that, as my grandmother would say, I operate within my ministry. I know what I’m good at, so I do that. I don’t exist in a world of limitations. I enjoy allowing my creations too manifest into what they desire to be. I just work to get out of the way of it. That’s hard as a creator, we like to believe we know what’s best for the art and we try to control the outcomes. The art knows what it wants to become. Just be a vessel that’s here to help the art get to its final destination of perfect expression. Creating and becoming more of who you are is never an easy journey. We have been conditioned to be everything but our authentic selves. As a creator, everyone isn’t going to see or understand your vision. That’s okay. The gift/vision came to you. As long as you see it and you’re committed to allowing it to manifest, that’s all that matters. It’s not always going to be easy, especially if you are entering into a field that’s new to you. You have to become the learner. Take the time to build your network and gain knowledge and experience in your field. The more you do, the better you will become. It doesn’t matter where you start. Do what you can where you are with what you have. It’s like sowing a seed; you don’t put it in the ground on Monday and expect to see fruit on Tuesday. You have to nurture it, water it and give it time to grow. When it’s ready, it will bring forth fruit.
I want people to know that QFN TV is a company that creates art that allows its audience to see themselves through a lens of authentic truth and perfect self-expression. I am proud that I have the courage to keep walking forward into the unknown, willing to climb the mountain in front of me and open to whatever that journey brings.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I think about qualities and skills that are most impactful, so many things come to mind. Humility, knowledge of self and being present, Those are great qualities, but the one word that captures all of this for me, is courage. Courage is what is required on this journey. I can have all of the knowledge and skills, but If I don’t have the courage to move forward, then it doesn’t matter. Doing the right thing when people aren’t watching, standing up for your employees when the stakes are high, taking the shot at that new business or just standing in your truth, all require courage. They say a coward dies many times before his death, but the valiant only taste of death, once. Courage allows you to feel the fear and uncertainty and move forward anyway.
I think people on their journey should understand that courage is external, it comes from trusting relationships. We need external support in order to be courageous. Think about the armed forces taking a hill or circus acts on those high trampolines, they are able to do the things they do courageously because someone next to them, that they trust, has their back. Don’t be afraid to be an honest trusting person and sow seeds of a courageous infinite mindset. When you are willing to operate that way, there isn’t a person, partner or employee that will not be willing to stand beside you and take the hill.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I have learned to let things go, leave ego behind and be flexible, Things don’t always show up how you dreamed them, just stand in the space of allowing and be ready when the moment comes. I have learned to let things go. Ugh, I can’t say this enough. The failures, the heartbreaks and the mistakes, just let it all go. I don’t know about most people but I know that I have spent to much time revisiting things that I can’t revise. You were who you were in that moment, we just have to release it, be okay with it and work to be better the next time. I keep this quote in mind when I find myself stuck and looking back at my past “Even the trees are wise enough to let go of the leaves that no longer serve them”.
