We recently connected with Karin West and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karin, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
I think there are always times when creativity is more, or less free flowing. My approach is to make something as soon as I have an idea, so I don’t forget it and just keep on making things. At the end of my design season, I edit and only choose what I love.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an artist designer who is obsessed by making new things. I think everyone has their own vision and that is what makes them special. At this point my perspective is from years, and years of experience and a taste level that reflects that as well as a very creative, edgy slant. I never wanted to just add to the market, I always wanted to make something that is handmade, unique and special. I feel that getting dressed is a way to express yourself and your choice in jewelry says a lot about you.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I find the obsession to make new things completely fascinating and I am always looking at new things to get inspired by.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My Mom was my biggest cheerleader. She would support me in whatever creative thing I was interested in. I beaded, made candles, did macreme etc. I used to love to make my Mom purses out of paper. She would gush and tell me how much she loved them. In later years she became my business partner and would handle the business end to allow me to be able to create.
