Meet karlon mcdonald

We recently connected with Karlon Mcdonald and have shared our conversation below.

Karlon, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
In essence, my self-discipline is deeply rooted in my passion for art history and cultural exploration. By studying the great artists of the past and immersing myself in the richness of various cultures, I have not only expanded my artistic horizons but also developed the determination and perseverance needed to excel in my own creative endeavors. This ongoing journey of discovery continues to fuel my self-discipline and serves as a constant source of inspiration in my artistic pursuits.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I believe my journey before graduating from SAE has been quite unconventional but immensely rewarding. While still a student, I applied to and was fortunate enough to be accepted into the top art school in the country, SCAD. However, after a year, I decided to take a year off to work full-time to gain practical experience.

During that year, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a camera operator for ESPN and Georgia State University, where I’ve been a part of some of the biggest events in Atlanta. This experience not only allowed me to refine my camera skills but also exposed me to the fast-paced and dynamic world of live sports broadcasting.

In addition to my work with ESPN and GSU, I’ve also been involved in various film projects, further expanding my skill set and creative horizons.

Overall, my unique path has provided me with a well-rounded foundation in both sports broadcasting and film, and I’m excited to bring this diverse skill set to future endeavors in the industry.

I’m really excited about the journey I’ve embarked on with my newly established production company. The prospect of shooting our first film next year is both thrilling and challenging. This venture represents a culmination of years of passion, dedication, and learning within the film industry. I believe that this first project will not only be a testament to our team’s hard work but also a meaningful addition to the world of cinema. We’re eagerly looking forward to bringing our creative vision to life and making a positive impact through storytelling.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Communication, culture research, and artistic language have been pivotal skill sets in my journey for several compelling reasons. Firstly, effective communication is the cornerstone of any successful endeavor. Whether I’m collaborating with colleagues, presenting ideas, or connecting with diverse audiences, the ability to convey thoughts clearly and empathetically is paramount. It fosters understanding, reduces misunderstandings, and ultimately drives progress.

Secondly, cultural research has been instrumental in navigating a globalized world. Understanding and respecting cultural nuances is crucial, especially in our interconnected society. It has allowed me to build meaningful relationships, bridge gaps, and approach challenges with a broader perspective.

Lastly, artistic language has added a unique dimension to my skill set. It’s not just about creative expression but also about tapping into emotions, creating impactful narratives, and connecting on a deeper level with people. This skill has enriched my storytelling abilities, making my communication more compelling and memorable.

To develop these skills, individuals can take several steps. First, they can seek out courses and resources that focus on communication, cultural studies, and artistic expression. Practicing these skills through real-world experiences, such as engaging with diverse communities or participating in artistic endeavors, can also be incredibly beneficial. Additionally, being open to feedback and continuous self-improvement is key to honing these skills over time.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Jacob Lawrence’s biography and his art series, “The Struggle” and “The Great Migration,” are not only significant for their artistic merit but also for their enduring relevance to contemporary society. These works offer a unique window into the past, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of African Americans during critical periods in history.

Researching the eras depicted in Lawrence’s paintings allows us to connect the dots between the struggles of the past and the challenges we still face today. By studying the Great Migration, we gain insight into the resilience and determination of those who sought a better life despite adversity, inspiring us to confront contemporary issues such as immigration, racial inequality, and social justice.

Lawrence’s art serves as a timeless reminder of the need for continued social progress and empathy. The struggles he portrayed in his series resonate with current discussions on racial disparities, economic inequality, and civil rights. This connection to our present-day challenges underscores the importance of preserving and studying Lawrence’s work and biography, as they serve as both historical records and sources of inspiration for positive change.
