We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Hooray Osmond. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate Hooray below.
Kate Hooray, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My work reflects the way that I move through my everyday experience. Life can be intense, saturated, drab, washed-ordered, and chaotic in deferent areas of our lives all at the same time. Our life is a symphony of choices, paths, relationships, and growth. When I walk into my studio, I don’t know how my painting-journey will go; it depends entirely on the energies and narratives occurring just under the surface of my skin, waiting to rise up onto the canvas.
In this way, every painting is different and would be different, had it been painted on a different day. I never run out of creativity or motivation because I just paint life, and life is happening all the time. I think it’s important to highlight how beautiful everyday experience can be and that it can never be just one thing.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I make joyful art, art that is full of genuine hope. I acknowledge that pain is a part of life, but just a part. All facets, all colors of life must be considered to see the whole picture. My latest painting series, “Fruiting Bodies,” consists of large-scale, bright paintings that highlight the beauty in everyday life: such as walking down the street, or crossing a bridge, or sitting in a field. It’s all beautiful.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and foremost, I accept that rejection is a part of success, a very big part. My career experiences more rejection than it does open doors. It’s important to cultivate resilience and push outside our comfort-barriers in order to grow and see where we have been. It’s also important to be a good friend, support those that are in a similar line of work and look out for each other.
Experiment with your career and your creativity. We are not meant to be stagnant, repetitive beings. We are dynamic and can create beautiful, emergent things.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that I have been reading and re-reading again recently is “Spell of the Sensuous” by David Abram. It reminds me that I am never alone, not for one second, on this Earth. I am connected and a part of every other tether that is existing at this moment.
