We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate Morgan Publicist a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kate Morgan, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t subscribe to the concept of imposter syndrome at this stage of the game. I am always eager to learn, develop and grow and this happens with deep connections and experiences it. What I am able to learn from others, others are able to learn from me too. I am very steadfast in what my strengths are, and I lean into them without an ounce of second guessing myself. At the earlier stages of a career, of course imposter syndrome can be a factor. But getting older and wiser haha, you learn to embrace – or at least I have – what you’re simply just really good at, and carry this with pride not second guessing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I founded Morgan Publicity: a PR Firm with Soul. Firmly rooted in Los Angeles, but with outposts in New York City and London. Our clients are global, as is our contact base of media, influencers, and celebrities.
PR is like the billboard to your business, and we are the folks behind the scenes ensuring that billboard is going to get some eyeballs on it.
We work with brands in the beauty, health, wellness and lifestyle space: from start ups that we help to turn into legacy brands, established heavy hitters, and companies/people we simply feel super passionate about.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Get back to old school ‘public relating’. Invite a contact, or someone you want to establish a relationship with, to lunch, coffee etc. We are so chained to our emails, but nothing beats personable interaction. And don’t just talk shop either. Get to know the person that is sitting across from you. Show you’re a human not just a work horse. Something as simple as a breakfast meeting with an editor I wanted to forge a relationship has developed – on so many occasions – to true friendships, and killer coverage. Step away from the computer once in a while!
2.Know that editors receives thousands of pitches a week, countless PR packages, and as a PR you’re a dime a dozen. See point 1, help yourself stand out. Be that person that when you send that email, they want to open it as a sincere connection is there.
3. Set realistic expectations with clients. For example, if your client refuses to join an affiliate program, make sure they understand coverage will be deeply impacted by this decision. Know the landscape you’re dealing with so your clients can too.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They encouraged me to follow my gut and forge my own path in life. Never pressured me in anyway to be anything or anyone other than who I authentically am.
I am grateful my parents didn’t push myself or my siblings in any set direction. My life has flowed in the most amazing way, and that is because of values instilled in my by my parents.
