Hi Katelyn , thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Burnout is incredibly difficult to avoid in this photo/video industry – especially at the end of the year in what most of us consider the busy season.
The pressure to constantly produce, create, and meet expectations can overshadow the importance of self-care. To avoid burnout in the craziest of times, taking care of yourself – both professionally and personally – is very important.
It is hard to create that balance – especially in a world where clients are watching us on social media. There is an element of guilt when we post something online that isn’t considered “work” when we have a list of clients waiting for their products. But we have to realize that we are human too, separate from our small businesses. Creating a schedule for yourself and your business is key! I work 8-5 every day, and having those boundaries has really helped me! Though I check my email 24/7 waiting for inquires to come through… if I get an email outside of 8-5 that can wait till tomorrow to answer… I wait. Even though I am a full time business owner, the clients I want to work with are those that also understand I am a person who has a family and my me time is important. Creating boundaries is a crucial in avoiding burnout and to not only create a healthy work environment but to give your best work to your clients.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For those early in their journey I would tell them: just do it. It’s easy to think “I dont have the best gear” or “I’ll never be as good as XYZ person”. But who I was 5 years ago when we started this company isn’t who I Am today – I am more skilled, more knowledgable, and more excited about our company now than I was then. And truly that is because we just DID IT! We didn’t have the best gear, but we had “good enough”. We didn’t know alllll the settings of the camera, but we knew enough to get going – so just go. The more you dive into the industry and truly invest your time and energy into it – you’ll be surprised what you can do 3, 5, 10 years down the road!
