We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katrina Loberiza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katrina below.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a professional dancer and actor. For most of my life, dance was my focus but it has shifted to acting over the past couple of years. I’ve worked on some amazing projects and I’m excited to announce that my first horror feature titled “Weekend Deadaway” will be released on multiple platforms this September. In addition, I landed my first lead role in a comedy drama feature that is currently in post-production. I portrayed a complex character—an emotionally scarred woman with a sharp wit and intellect, however, reluctant to form new connections. Each project I take on has its own challenges. I love diving into new characters and I’m grateful for every opportunity I get. It would be a dream to be a part of a sci-fi series like Westworld (my favorite show).
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
It’s difficult to narrow down just one impactful thing my parents have done for me. They’ve taught me so much. They’ve always been extremely supportive and created a solid foundation for me. I know that no matter what happens, my family will be there for me. Because of them, I’m not afraid to fail because I know I will be okay. I’m so fortunate to have such loving and amazing parents.
Katrina, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Persisting while having mental health challenges is so crucial. As an actor, I face constant rejection so developing mental toughness is imperative. There are a few things that I do in order to keep moving forward.
For me, maintaining a healthy balance with social media is important. I’ve learned to limit my time on apps and be selective about the opportunities and events I go to. I make sure they align with my values and aspirations. We have to remember that we don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Understand that you can’t please everyone.
Also, I have to remind myself of the odds it took to get to where I am. For example, many casting calls attract over 5,000 submissions, with only 150 actors getting an audition. If you’re fortunate enough to land that audition, you’re already in the top 3%. If you’re lucky and you snag the role, your chance of getting it is only 0.02%. So whenever I land a role or even an audition, I remember to be grateful.
Spirituality also plays a significant role in my life. I find guidance by praying and reflecting. When I feel anxiety after missing out on opportunities that I really wanted and thought I was perfect for – I connect back to my faith and remind myself that what’s meant for me will come in due time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Be humble, selfless, and resilient.
Your ego is only going to set you back. You’re not going to be crazy about every opportunity that comes your way and that’s normal. As a new actor, see those opportunities as stepping stones. I’ve encountered individuals who dismiss projects they deem beneath them, but you never know who you might encounter on set, who might be observing your work, or where that opportunity might lead you. Stay open-minded and humble and see where it takes you.
Remembering to be selfless is important, especially in a society that is constantly promoting self-care and self-love. Those things are important too but don’t forget to prioritize others as well. Helping and caring for others is very rewarding. Being an actor is difficult enough, so support and collaborate with your peers and watch each other succeed.
Lastly, being able to bounce back after let downs is crucial. Be resilient. Embrace your missteps and allow them to ignite your resolve to push yourself even further
