Meet Kayla Taitt

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Taitt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kayla, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being “the only one in the room” is a common phenomenon as a young black woman in the U.S., especially within the niches of this industry that I find myself drawn to. It can feel intimidating at times, but I have actually developed a new relationship with it.

I have found that the things that make me different than the others in this room provides me a perspective that no one else has, which then contributes to the quality and intention of my work. There is a spark within me that no one else has because it is unique to my person. This does not only apply to the experience of being a young black creative in these spaces, but it applies to the general principle of knowing that you are what makes your work worth while.

There is no one on this Earth that has my mind, my background, or my unique perspective, and that is what I have learned as I create, and has contributed to my success in the digital media production industry. Be yourself, and trust that you are the magic.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Absolutely! MIKO Creative is a media production studio where we specialize in digital and social marketing. Here, we produce digital content for businesses and independents that can be used across a multitude of platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, Websites, Email, and more. We offer a range of options to be suited to our clients’ needs, whether it’s a long term relationship to create consistent collateral, or a short term individual project. Our approach is mindful and intentional, as we combine our sense of creativity with the psychological considerations of marketing to human beings.

As the Founder & Creative Director here at MIKO Creative, I truly enjoy the process of bringing ideas to fruition for our clients and for ourselves as a studio. It is absolutely rewarding to step back and look at what you have created, and to feel confident about it.

As we are stepping into 2024, MIKO Creative is welcoming a new phase of clientele, as well as forming new in-house projects to share the art we create with our audience as the year unfolds. We are very excited for what/who is to come!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When looking back, I would say that the three most important qualities or skills to obtain have been patience, failure, and consistency.

It has been extremely important for me throughout this journey to remain open through these virtues. To be patient is to be okay with failing, and then getting back up and trying again, and then doing this until you get it right. To be consistent is to be patient, and to continue with what you are working towards even if it feels like there is no movement.

My advice to anyone getting started is to just keep moving forward, and learn how to be okay with things not being “perfect” to start. Practice patience, be consistent with this practice, and learn how to fail.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We are always looking to expand our network here at MIKO Creative, and would love to work with other creatives.

If I were to describe the sorts of collaborations we’re currently open to, company-wise this would definitely include a contractor relationship with local photographers and videographers in the Southern California region to support larger projects. On the creative side of things, we’d love to work with a local surf company this year to get some amazing shots on the water.

If anyone is ever interested in being a part of future projects, or just creating something beautiful with us, they are more than welcome to email us at [email protected]. Or, fill out a contact form on our website : mikocreative.com
