We recently connected with Keisha Brooks and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keisha, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
In the lively streets of Boston, where my journey began, I found myself at the crossroads of dreams and uncertainties at the cuff of my parent’s divorce. I became a Kansas City native who, over the years, has evolved into a woman of many roles – a mother, podcaster, real estate investor specializing in short-term rentals, and risk management consultant. Looking back, I realize that my ability to embrace risks and transform them into stepping stones to success has been the cornerstone of my journey. As a proud alumna of Columbia College, I’ve walked a path uniquely my own. My academic foundation in criminalistics laid the groundwork for a disciplined approach to analyzing situations. But it was my recent Master’s degree in Jurisprudence with an emphasis on Risk Management from Texas A&M University that truly honed my skills in navigating the uncertain waters of opportunity and potential setbacks.
Growing up, I felt that innate nudge within me, urging me to leap into the unknown. It’s that same nudge that propels countless individuals toward their destinies. Some, however, are held back by the grip of fear. Others seize it but struggle to steer its course. And then there are the few who stand at the cliff, bridging the gap between aspirations and action. I found myself in that latter category.
The realization dawned on me – the heart of risk lies in understanding its consequences. To tackle it head-on, I began by asking a simple question: “What’s the worst that could happen?” With that inquiry, I embarked on a journey of examining the pros and cons of each choice before me. This calculated approach has been my compass for nearly two decades since the day I graduated high school.
Back in 2004, I made a bold decision that set the tone for my journey. Instead of rushing into college, I chose a gap year. While many teenagers sought leisure, I worked diligently, saving up for my education. It was a risk to pause amidst the rhythm of life, but during that time, I delved into introspection. Travel and journaling became my companions, fostering a wealth of ideas – some of which entailed substantial risks, like moving away from the familiar.
As my academic journey unfolded, so did the complexities of my personal life. Love, a risk, entered the picture. Balancing personal ambitions with those of a partner was a challenge I embraced, learning that even relationships require calculated steps.
The years have taught me that every decision, no matter how trivial, bears an inherent risk. The key lies in embracing this reality and navigating it strategically. Plans shift, circumstances change, and I’ve mastered the art of adapting without relinquishing my goals.
Fueled by a passion for Risk Management and Analysis, I’ve empowered entrepreneurs, corporations, and businesses to thrive amidst uncertainties. My knack for crafting intricate risk matrices and translating complex concepts into clear communication has fostered strong relationships with other business owners, agencies, and firms, facilitating seamless risk management implementations.
Now, as I stand at this juncture, I’m driven to channel my expertise into an organization that values proactive risk management. Armed with analytical prowess and industry insights, I aim to elevate their risk management strategies. My story is one of resilience, of transforming risks into allies, and of steering the ship through the unpredictable waters of life.
In the end, my journey isn’t just mine alone; it’s a testament to the potential that lies within each of us. It’s a reminder that embracing risk isn’t just about seizing opportunities – it’s about cultivating the courage to steer our own course toward a future illuminated by our aspirations.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Presently, I am aspiring to excel in Risk Management and Analysis, my journey has revolved around empowering entrepreneurs, business owners, and corporations to achieve growth in the face of uncertainties. In my current business where I am the Risk Strategy Director, I help other property owners create successful teams and 5-star experiences. I do this by developing and implementing financial and operational risk matrices, I have successfully guided clients in the insurance and asset management industries. My expertise spans Employment Law, Insurance Law, and Cybersecurity Law, equipping me with a diverse skill set to address complex risk scenarios. I have witnessed the positive impact of my risk analysis frameworks, enabling businesses to make well-informed decisions and thrive in volatile markets. Now, my goal is to join an innovative organization that values proactive risk management. I aim to leverage my analytical acumen and industry insights to elevate the organization’s risk management strategies. The number one thing that excites me about all that I do, is the drive that my children push on their own by my example. To be one of their role models and have a front-row seat to their success and achievement, I live for that.
I am always open to opportunities to partner with other like-minded individuals because my village is always evolving in each season I transition.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Multiple pivotal aspects have left an indelible mark on my journey. Among these, three central revelations have illuminated the path to a meaningful life: wisdom, purpose, and intentionality. Embracing authenticity, nurturing constructive bonds, and prioritizing holistic well-being is of paramount importance. These foundational tenets harmonize to craft a journey that yields abundant fulfillment, reaching beyond mere financial achievements. To those embarking on their initial steps, I extend the following insights, hoping they offer valuable enlightenment on your own voyage of discovery.
Operating in Good Faith and Character:
Embracing a foundation of good faith and character is a cornerstone of enduring success. This ethos not only shapes your actions but also influences how others perceive you. Your commitment to operating with integrity creates a lasting impression and builds trust that can span a lifetime.
Strategic Relationships:
Surrounding yourself with individuals who share your aspirations and values is instrumental. This deliberate alignment cultivates a supportive environment where mutual growth and collaboration thrive. Concurrently, recognizing toxic influences and maintaining a healthy distance from them safeguards your journey from negativity.
Balancing Rest and Work:
Rest is an essential component of a sustainable journey. Just as hard work propels you forward, allowing yourself to recharge is vital. Finding moments of respite enables you to maintain the energy and focus necessary for long-term progress.
Holistic Well-being:
Financial stability is only one facet of a fulfilling life. Attaining overall well-being requires nurturing every aspect of your existence – spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical. This holistic approach ensures that your journey is enriched on multiple fronts, leading to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
Stepping into Discomfort:
Growth often arises from embracing discomfort. Entering unfamiliar territory can be an opportunity for expansion, provided you’re prepared to stretch your limits. It’s essential to differentiate between healthy challenges that promote growth and situations that might be overwhelming.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the last 12 months, my journey has witnessed significant growth and transformation, particularly in my ability to focus amidst challenging circumstances. Remarkably, I successfully navigated the demands of pursuing a Master’s degree in law while concurrently embracing the roles of an active parent and walking through the valley of the complexities of grief stemming from personal death losses and farewells. This period symbolized my commitment to resilience, balance, and personal development. Overcoming adversities and managing multiple responsibilities, I have polished my capacity to maintain an unwavering focus on my educational pursuits while tending to the emotional intricacies of life. This evolution reflects the power of determination and adaptability, marking a profound chapter of growth in my ongoing journey.
