Meet Kellee Murrell

We recently connected with Kellee Murrell and have shared our conversation below.

Kellee, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
It is a wonderful blessing is when your purpose and passion align. I found my purpose at 14 when I started my first job working for New York Summer Youth Employment program. I was a daycare teacher in the NYC housing projects summer program. There, I found my passion for education and for creating equal educational opportunities for all students. I would later work for a wealthy summer camp on my summer breaks while in college, and I saw the disparity in programming between the wealthy and the poor. As a child growing up in the Bronx, New York, I always wanted to attend a better, safer school, but my single mother could not afford it. My purpose and passion are to provide an exceptional educational experience for all students, primarily those with limited resources. As a teacher and school administrator, I am inspired when I see a young person excited to go to school and learn. I did not grow up that way, and I want for others what I didn’t get the chance to have. I want kids to find their purpose and passion in school and cultivate creativity. Our purpose should bring us joy and encourage us to impact the lives of others.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I currently serve as the George T. Lee, Jr. Principal at St. Philip’s School & Community Center. I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History Education from Clark Atlanta University and a Master’s in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. I began my career in Dallas at Tyler Street Christian Academy as a history teacher, then continued my passion for educating children at Richardson West Junior High in Richardson ISD. There, my role in education was expanded, serving as the 7th-grade girls’ basketball coach, 21st Century after-school program coordinator, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) campus coordinator and teacher.

My career path led to serving as assistant principal at Richardson North Junior High and Lake Highlands Junior High before accepting the principal role at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet.

“Education is my life’s work and my God-given passion,” I affirm and believe there is always work to be done to improve the quality of education for all students.

At St. Philip’s School and Community Center, we focus on a Love of Self, a Love of God, a Love of Learning, and a love for others. Those key components are embedded in the curriculum and culture of the school. Education is just a foundation, and it’s what we do with this new knowledge to transform our community that matters. Our students learn to apply their knowledge and serve their neighbors. Next school year, we will expand to 8th grade. We are currently taking applications for all grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that have been most impactful for me are faith, a strong work ethic, and a humble spirit. My faith in God and confidence in my abilities have transformed my journey in education. I did not come from a prestigious family or university. I believe God has a plan for my life, and I need to do my part and prepare for that success. I encourage anyone to start the journey and believe in their success. It’s a positive mindset and a willingness to continue despite the challenges that propel you. Finally, a humble spirit keeps you grounded and reminds you to be grateful and to help another person because many helped you on your journey.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest growth area is to be intentional about working on myself first. I am spending more personal time reading and exercising to be more consistent and disciplined. This has helped ensure that I am whole before helping and supporting others.
