We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelly Melistas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelly below.
Kelly , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I obtained my work ethic from my parents. My parents immigrated to this land of opportunity (United States) from Greece in the late 1970’s with only $100 in their pocket. They barely spoke any English but were determined to succeed and raise a wonderful family. Their hard work, effort and dedication was their top priority and they were able to succeed. They give it all of their best and their strong work ethic was embedded in me since I was a little girl. I have been knocked down many times in my life but have always gotten up determined to try and try again until I succeeded. Failure does not exist in my playbook. Only perseverance, strength and optimism!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a Child and Adolescent Psychologist (Kelly) and my husband (George) a Civil Engineer, helping people and solving problems has always been in our DNA. As parents of twins, my husband and I were concerned about household safety, including electrical wall outlets and switches that control fireplaces, garbage disposals, overhead fan, sensitive electronic equipment, etc. We quickly discovered that most products we tried for baby-proofing were just baby-resistant – and some came with the added concerns of being potential choking hazards.
Eventually, kids figure everything out, By 18 months, our twins were pulling the standard plug-in outlet covers that are sold on the market with their little fingers out of the socket and placing them in their mouths, which is clearly a choking hazard. One friend’s son was pulling them out with his teeth. I scoured every brick and mortar and online store out there and told my husband we need to come up with something better!
What we invented is known as “Child Be Safe” and “childbesafe.com” safety products. Child Be Safe manufactures and sells hard plastic cover devices that use a patented three-button system for parents to access the switches and outlets when needed. They can be installed using regular mounting screws in less that one minute.
In addition to keeping kids safe, the covers also can keep your pets safe and protect them from harm’s way as well. We have received a ton of praise from Pet Owners regarding our safety products!
Our goal is to help the community. I don’t have to worry about my own kids, or my friends coming over with their kids or pets – it’s peace of mind that I’m so happy we can give to other parents and pet owners!
Above all, our life-saving child and pet safety products are “MADE IN USA” which is certainly something that my family and I are very proud of. We are very proud of our registered trademarked brand and all that it has to offer.
It feels great being able to make a difference in a parents’, pet owners, child’s and pets’ life with our life-saving safety products!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities, skills and areas of knowledge that were most impactful were:
– A phenomenal upbringing and education as well as working in sales when I was in high school and throughout college. This helped build my impeccable writing and communication skills and has helped me venture outside of my comfort zone when dealing with customers, vendors, etc.
– I am a licensed Child and Adolescent Psychologist and that has given me the tools and techniques that I need to cope with matters and issues that I face on a daily basis running my company, Child Be Safe (childbesafe.com).
– Being a Mom of Twin Children has also made me who I am today. Being a Mom has made me more patient and has given me tools and techniques that are necessary to run a my successful company on a day-to-day basis, Child Be Safe (childbesafe.com)
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge that I am currently facing as a small business owner within my company, Child Be Safe is how to grow my company and how do I take it to the next level as well as how can my Team and I spread the word outside of just social media about our life-saving child and pet safety products?
I believe that every small business owner faces the same challenges as I am currently facing. The only way to overcome this challenge is to be strong and think positive and to never, ever say no to any opportunities that arise because who knows, that next phone call or email that I receive could be my next break that can help propel me to that next level of growth and continued success for childbesafe.com!
I live by the saying, “Never, Ever, Give Up!”
