We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kendrick King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kendrick below.
Kendrick, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I prayed for it! As a kid I was always creating something to occupy my time. Drawing, games, watching cartoons and in my head adding myself to their story lines and acting them out: creating kids next door id badges! Those were good times when I was 100% me but, as life goes on the world does get a hold of us and it changes us a little. I started worrying what other people thought, following the crowd, and going through life not really knowing who I really was or what my purpose was. I was always good at almost anything that I put my mind to but never great because I never knew my WHY all I knew was that my friends were doing it so that’s why I’m doing it. Everything came to an end once high school ended. I never thought about my future or what else I wanted to do. I ended up in a dark place and I remember sitting on the back steps of my moms house and just praying for a purpose in life! Those thoughts of being a better version of myself and bringing back the things that made me happy as a kid with being creative came back into my head. I seen the visions and I started walking in my purpose. I walked my way into finding a way to leave my hometown and into college. I made it there and I really had to bet on myself because I knew my path would be the hardest but, I made it work. I put myself in positions were I would be challenged to grow. That creativity as a kid transformed into me taking mass media courses and using that as my new way of creating and having fun in what I was learning and doing. I also ran into some good people along the way who also reminded me of what my purpose was other than creating media and that was giving back to others. I remember not growing up with much so, when the opportunity came along I did not only join 1 fraternity that’s all about giving back to the community but I joined 2. Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Incorporated and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated; all of a sudden not only am I still walking in my purpose with media but know I helping people less fortunate, cleaning up the streets, meeting with children reading to them and giving them positive advice and showing them that you can come from anywhere and still be success If you put your mind to it. Here is the cool part about all of this; right now I am a High School Film Teacher, I’m on the board for a film production company (Philanthro Films) here in South Georgia, and I have my own media business. I’m still walking in my purpose and it’s getting bigger every day. If you continue to find yourself and grow your purpose will find you!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Right now I am currently a film teacher at Lowndes High School and I am in grad school. Those are the main things I am focused on for now but I do take some time out to still take photos. The position that I am in right now is great because I get to do something that I love to do everyday. Teaching is a challenge but I think that’s what makes it exciting. My business “Working Media” is put on a little hold for now because of everything that I have going on but, the plan is to come back bigger and better and we are almost there.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most impactful for me was: Developing Patience, Work ethic, and good character. When you are just starting out on your journey try not to look at someone else journey and compare it to yours. Be kind to yourself don’t beat yourself up over every little mistake it’s life it happens. Live life but always stay focused on purpose and goals. Be the hardest worker in the room. If you are serious about what you want to do put in the work and I promise you the result will be worth it. Be kind and treat people how you would like to be treated. Lastly, If you can not find a way, Make a way!
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I think the number one challenge I’m currently facing is teaching. Being able to teach kids with multiple way of learning information is not an easy challenge or goal to achieve. I am currently being a sponge and I am soaking up all of the help, guidance, resources. I just started graduate school as well where I am being taught how to do certain things to make what I do a little easier. I love what I do so, If I continue to give all of my effort into it and use what I’ve been taught I know this challenge I can overcome and become a great teacher!
