Meet Kent Speakman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kent Speakman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kent, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I was a big nerd when I was a child, glasses, braces, and got picked on quite a bit or bullied. One day I stood up to my bully and that ended me getting picked on. I then found sports and got good at baseball and racing mountain bikes, and that gave me another level of confidence. Then as my first job washing dishes in a kitchen found me back at the bottom of the confidence chain, or so I thought, I began to learn from the line cooks and eventually was given an opportunity to move to making salads, followed by the pastas, then grill, forno ovens and eventually mastered all of those positions. I was given an opportunity to be the assistant head night chef, which I loved, and then the head night chef, where I had 10 chefs nightly cooking under my guidance to put out hundreds of dishes a night at one of the most popular restaurants in the city! I even got onto the culinary development team for the company and got to improve the internal processes and develop other leaders. They have a few spots now in the USA, and here in LA there is DTLA, Manhattan Beach and Woodland Hills – called Joey!

That taught me confidence as a leader and the importance of understanding every role and position on a team so that we can excel together.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resiliency. Consistency. Empathy.

You have to be resilient, keep going no matter what obstacles come in your way, keep showing up and being consistent, kind and determined to achieve your goals. You must be empathetic and think about what the other person or company wants in every exchange, and find out how to make sure you come through for them so every interaction is a win-win. Then you will keep building and growing together and reach your goals.
