Meet Kerra Shanice

We were lucky to catch up with Kerra Shanice recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kerra, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My ability to remain optimistic in most situations comes from making a conscious effort to establish the right mindset. I believe your mindset and your perspective play a huge part in what you have the potential to accomplish as well as what you attract. Of course, I have days when it’s difficult to remain positive but I try my best. I also strive to maintain healthy habits that keep my mental health in an overall good space. I talk to God, I speak affirmations, I write down declarations, and remind myself of my goals. I even self-reflect to see what I could have done better but I’m learning to do so while showing myself grace & not speaking negative comments against myself or the things I want to see manifested in my life.

Also, my favorite scripture for a long time has been Philippians 4:13 and a new favorite of mine is Mark 9:23. I keep these scriptures as touch points for when I need some encouragement. It’s been a journey and it’s ongoing but seeking God and utilizing resources to work through things has been helpful to see myself in a different light and embrace myself authentically. Doing that makes it easier to tap into my creativity and minimize some of the fear & anxiety. The peace that comes with that ultimately makes it easier for me to expect great things to happen.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Of course. So professionally, I’m a business owner — I offer high-quality wigs in addition to hair extensions and wig services. At the moment, I’m pretty focused on growing my business, TheKaeWay, at a pace that is comfortable for me. I want what I’ve created to last and be well thought out. Although I’ve changed a lot about my business since I started, I think taking it slow and steady, and not rushing to take on too many things too soon can be beneficial. There are just certain things that you figure out through experience and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I also work in healthcare tech recruiting at my 9-5 and honestly it’s nice to have a foot in both professional worlds. My job provides me with certain transferable skills and stability. This allows me as an entrepreneur to set working boundaries for myself and still give my clients a positive customer experience. I can take time to not focus on getting orders/sales and expand my skill set by trying new things with hair. Although I’m not a stylist, it takes time and creativity to showcase different styles, options, and services in a way that makes people want to invest in what I offer. I’d say that’s what makes TheKaeWay special. The thought put into it and the quality behind it. My business has evolved so much and will continue to do so.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that were most impactful on my journey would have to be integrity, consistency, and creativity.

My advice would be to just become confident in your craft but also be humble enough to keep learning and improving your craft. There will always be people who do things differently than you but it doesn’t necessarily mean any particular way is better, it’s just different. Try it all, figure out what works for you and keep moving forward.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In my opinion, my biggest area of growth in the last 12 months as a business owner has been my presentation. From teaching myself how to do the graphics (logo, price lists, website layout), to making my diy flower wall, the content I create for Instagram, and being more precise about the aesthetics. All of it has made a difference to me. Overall, I’m excited to see how I will continue to grow.
