Meet Kevin Gill

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Gill. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kevin, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always been resilient and consistent in ways that can get work completed. I tend to always create a lot of artwork within a short period of time. it is a skill or maybe even a habit I have developed since I started college back in 2015. As things tend to move on and you are at a stand still, you have to find ways to keep moving, for me I tend to get ideas as I’m creating to help boost me into my next project. College and being surrounded by other creatives kind of helped my develop a work ethic that has yet to fail me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an artist who creates bizarre imagery in terms of macabre surrealism. I use a style that many tattoo artists use to bring a tattoo look to a traditional fine art setting. I create works that have a tone of either psychedelics or heavy metal, I can create whatever kind of art, though my wheelhouse is the bizarre works. As I create my excitement comes from how I predict to final image looks when completed as I’m working on it, and as well as the reactions I get from my works. I can draw, paint, and make prints, I am currently exploring other mediums to become as versatile as possible to broaden my range and audience.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One thing that really impacted me was being in college surrounded by professors who have been through my position and have exceeded beyond expectations, I’ve utilized my professors for more than education, I have gathered as much advice and pointers I could before I moved on. Persistency is another quality I felt become impactful, as in I never gave up and always pushed my work and my name out as much as I possibly could. Having support from other really helps because now there’s other people throwing your name and work out there helping gain recognition. The advice I’d like to give is, if you’re in school talk to your professors they can give you some advice or even resources that can help you with your journey. If you’re not in school stay persistent apply to shows and push your name out, social media can make that easier for you.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Feeling overwhelmed can be a daunting thing when you have multiple projects and necessities that need to be done. Best thing that has helped me is to stay organized and create a schedule for yourself to create and complete work. Whatever free time you have is time you can apply towards your work to make progress, even if its only 30 mins, that’s a half hour you’re ahead than you were the day before.
