Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Reinoso. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
To keep my creativity alive as a DJ / Producer, I constantly seek inspiration by exposing myself to new music, genres, artists, and sounds, attending live performances, exploring different styles, and staying up to date with emerging trends. I also like to collaborate with fellow musicians, DJs, and producers to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to my work. Embrace experimentation and take risks by trying new techniques, instruments, and software, pushing the boundaries of my creativity. Set aside dedicated creative time, free from distractions, to immerse myself in music production. Stay updated with the latest technology, plugins, and tools to enhance the creative process. Take breaks to recharge my mind and body, engaging in activities that inspire you. Reflect on your past work, identify areas for improvement, and set goals to continuously evolve as an artist. Maintain a curious mindset, never stop learning, and explore music theory, production techniques, and industry trends. By incorporating these strategies, you can nurture your creativity and thrive as a DJ and music producer 100%.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I first started to dig into music when I was 12-13 years old. I have always been surrounded by music because my dad is actually a fan of music, so since I was a kid, he would always be blasting some good music from the living room while living in our apartment. He bought a DJ mixer console, the one where you could only use CDs, just for decoration. But I got so intrigued, and I started to play around with it, started to burn CDs with music, and basically learned by myself. From there, I started to play music at family events around 14, started to play around with Fruity Loops (now FL Studio), started to edit songs (mashups), then started to remix, and finally, made my own songs. From there, I have always tried to do things that set me apart from others by truly searching for my sound while enjoying the process. That is why you will notice I have songs from different genres because I enjoy making music, and pushing my limits while getting better in the music production aspect. As well as playing live shows, I try to always connect with the crowd while selecting the tunes I love that I am sure people will love too.
For those who are unfamiliar with me, I am a DJ and Producer with a diverse background. Although my family is originally from Cuba, I was born and raised in Venezuela before moving to Miami 10 years ago. Throughout my musical journey, I’ve always strived to distinguish myself by actively seeking my unique sound and enjoying the creative process. By combining my passion for music production and my dedication to connecting with the crowd, I strive to set myself apart as an artist. It’s about creating an energetic and memorable experience where everyone can enjoy the music together.
I continuously explore new boundaries and genres while honing my skills and pushing the limits of my creativity. My goal is to establish a genuine connection with the audience during live shows while selecting tracks that I personally love and am confident will resonate with them as well. With songs spanning different genres, I embrace the joy of making music and consistently challenge myself to improve my music production abilities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, there were three qualities that had a significant impact on my journey: being humble, believing in myself, and being open to good criticism. These qualities have been instrumental in my growth as a DJ and Producer. Here’s my advice for those who are early in their journey on how they can develop and improve these qualities:
Being Humble: Humility is essential in any creative endeavor. Recognize that there is always more to learn and room for improvement. Stay open-minded and embrace opportunities to learn from others, regardless of their level of experience. Be receptive to feedback and constructive criticism, as it can provide valuable insights that help refine your skills. Cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and surround yourself with supportive and knowledgeable individuals who can inspire and guide you.
Believing in Myself: Self-belief is crucial for success in the music industry. Have confidence in your abilities and the unique vision you bring to your art. Believe in the value of your creativity and the impact your music can have on others. Trust your instincts and take risks, even if it means venturing into unfamiliar territory. Cultivate a positive mindset, celebrate your successes, and learn from your failures. Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, mentors, and fellow artists who can uplift and encourage you on your journey.
Being Open to Good Criticism: Embrace feedback as a valuable tool for growth. Seek constructive criticism from trusted sources who have expertise in your field. Actively listen to their insights and consider how you can incorporate their suggestions to enhance your craft. Different perspectives can provide fresh ideas and push you to explore new creative avenues. Develop resilience and the ability to separate constructive feedback from negative criticism. Use criticism as an opportunity to refine your skills and elevate your artistry.
So in other words.. my advice to those starting their journey is to cultivate humility, believe in themselves, and be open to good criticism. These qualities will empower you to learn, grow, and develop your unique artistic voice. Remember to stay true to yourself, be persistent in pursuing your passion, and enjoy the process of continuous improvement.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth and improvement has been focusing on developing my own sound. I’ve always felt that my songs were lacking that distinctive element that sets you apart from others. Therefore, I dedicated significant time and effort to refine and define my unique sound.
During this period, I immersed myself in exploring various musical styles, experimenting with different production techniques, and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. I analyzed the works of artists who inspire me and studied their sonic signatures to understand what makes their sounds unique. This process of introspection and self-reflection allowed me to gain clarity on the direction I wanted to take with my music.
I delved deep into sound design, meticulously crafting and refining the elements that would define my signature sound. This involved experimenting with different instruments, textures, effects, and arrangements to create something that resonates with my artistic vision.
Throughout this journey, I sought feedback from trusted mentors, fellow artists, and my audience. Their perspectives and insights helped me fine-tune my sound further and identify areas for improvement. Embracing constructive criticism and incorporating valuable feedback played a vital role in my growth.
