We were lucky to catch up with Kim Hix recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I had two hard working parents, mom a nurse, dad a realtor and business owner, both worked tirelessly. My mom loved her work and always worked extra shifts or worked late, always on time. My dad was a successful realtor, builder and business owner, very smart and business savvy. I have worked since I was 14, in High School, and had a regular 3 day a week babysitting job before then. I have always been independent and like taking care of myself, making my own money, never liked asking my parents for money, this desire to be self sufficient has stayed with me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started my training business in 2016 and have been very fortunate to be successful. I love helping others to feel better and teaching them how to care for themselves in a healthy way. The past 19 months have brought about circumstances that have turned my life around and taken some focus off of my business and sent me in a new direction. In February of 2022 my love, my 23 year old daughter was poisoned and died from fentanyl poisoning, by taking what she was told was a Xanax for her anxiety, it was actually pure fentanyl. This of course has shattered my world, and in the midst of this I started a nonprofit to bring awareness to others about this crisis, fentanyl poisoning, that is killing over 300 ppl a day & is the leading cause of death for ppl under 45. The nonprofit, Kelsie’s Cause, Fentanyl facts, Truths, Awareness, raises money to continue this fight & donate back to other charities. I also wrote a book to give others insight into her life, and death, dealing with addiction, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, “Hear me Speak. Thoughts from an Angel” on Amazon. Much of my time is spent spreading awareness, doing podcasts and interviews, rally’s to make the public, parents, aware of this evil killing a generation.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
- Resilience
- Determination
- Character
Early in your career, spend time learning, from ppl better than you, learning as much as you can, watching, listening.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents insisted I leave town to attend college, to get out of my comfort zone, and explore new opportunities.
