Meet Kimberly Parker

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimberly Parker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimberly below.

Kimberly, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Navigating spaces where I’m the only one who looks like me has been a defining aspect of my journey (and a huge catalyst for the things that I am most passionate about), having moved from California to Texas eight years ago. This recurrent experience has shaped my resilience, progressing from survival to thriving, thanks to the guidance of trailblazers and mentors.

In my master’s program, I often found myself as the sole Black individual in classes. Connecting with others sharing marginalized identities became a source of strength. Launching my business involved seeking insights from successful Black female business coaches, guiding me through the entrepreneurial journey.

Similarly, in my doctoral studies, being the only Black person in my cohort presented challenges. Drawing support from POC faculty members, including my remarkable chair, and my family, I am successfully navigating my program and my various roles (it’s hard, but I am making it).

A crucial part of my strategy is purposefully surrounding myself with those who have achieved what I aspire to. Recognizing that I’m not always the smartest person in the room fosters continuous learning. This intentional approach, coupled with mentorship and peer support, has been pivotal in thriving in situations where my uniqueness stands out.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello! I’m Kimberly Parker (she/her), the CEO of Revive to Thrive Wellness Center, a Texas-based group practice. Additionally, I am an LPC, LCDC, and Transformative Coach, specializing in trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, and life transitions. Committed to culturally humble care, I empower individuals, addressing unique challenges faced by marginalized populations.

Currently, I am pursuing a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. This program provides rigorous training in counseling, instructing, supervising, and conducting research. Furthermore, my educational role allows me to supervise and mentor students in counseling programs. Outside of these roles, I leverage my experience and passion as a speaker and trainer, focusing on the topic of cultural humility. I offer engaging training sessions to enhance understanding and cultural humility.

What excites me most about what I get to do is the knowledge that there is nothing else I would rather pursue. I find peace in knowing that I am walking in the purpose and calling for my life. Additionally, I am thrilled about “being the change that I want to see in the world,” which involves bringing healing to marginalized communities directly and indirectly, whether through counseling, teaching, supervising, researching, or training. There’s a lot of variety with the same goal in mind.

The other thing that excites me is seeing my clients grow! From wanting to die one day to claiming that they now choose life… that is exactly what I am here for!

And just one more (for now)… I love working with my cycle breakers from BIPOC communities. The work of a cycle breaker is hard, but it is so worth it… and my brave clients show that every day as they give this thing called life (which can be filled with dysfunctional relationships) a chance.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, there are a few qualities/skills that significantly impacted my path, that stick out to me more than others. Firstly, understanding “my ministry” has been crucial. I’m not an accountant or an attorney, and I didn’t attend business school. Acknowledging this and seeking help within my realm of expertise has proven invaluable. Secondly, the willingness to take risks and bet on myself has propelled me forward. Lastly, the quality that resonates most with those I serve is my genuine and authentic self, quirks included.

For those at an earlier stage in their journey, my advice is twofold. If you struggle with authenticity, consider reaching out to a counselor or coach to enhance your self-esteem/view of self. Embrace your uniqueness—you’re amazing and should radiate that. Additionally, if asking for help is a challenge, it might be tied to a deeper issue, making it worthwhile to consult with a counselor or coach for support. Lastly, recognize that you can’t do it all. We’re not designed to. Be open to seeking help at a pace that suits you, bit by bit.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m eager to collaborate with fellow professionals who cater to the same types of clients I serve in counseling. Not only do I want to act as a referral source for them (e.g., serve as a counseling referral for a gynecologist), but I’m also interested in providing training on effectively serving BIPOC individuals from our distinct yet parallel roles. Recently, I’ve joined forces with a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and I’m excited to see the impactful outcomes we can achieve together!
