We recently connected with Kimbreli Flournoy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimbreli, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from my athletic background. Growing up, I ran track and played basketball, which was a big part of my identity. As I began to focus more on basketball, I knew that hard work and dedication were non-negotiable if I wanted to reach my goals. I grew up in a sports family so I had my brothers to push me and my dad who coached me. They never took it easy on me and did not allow me to be mediocre. From playing as a little girl to playing in college, work ethic became a part of my DNA and I apply it to everything I do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I like to consider myself your favorite employee turned entrepreneur. I am a 9–5 entrepreneur and designer who is passionate about helping service providers grow their impact and income.
I am someone who loves to design and help others grow, and I am blessed that I get to do it in my day job as well. I get to bring my experience in designing websites and creating marketing and advertising strategies for the government and corporations to everything I do.
As a web and brand designer, my goal is to empower my clients to make a bigger impact and more income by visually bringing their vision to life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I would say the most important qualities or skills that I feel were most impactful to my journey were being curious, open-minded, and not being afraid to network. When I started my business, I had no idea how to run a business or what that entailed, but I knew I was willing to learn. That made me curious to try new things and meet like-minded people.
For anyone new to starting their journey, I would say to remember your why. You will be extremely excited in the beginning and want to try anything and everything, which is great, but you will also have moments that will feel discouraging and overwhelming. In both moments, remember why you started in the first place. Also, don’t get caught up in comparing yourself to those in the same industry as you. Focus on you and what makes you unique.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love collaborating and working with other business owners. I enjoy working with ambitious service providers who value making an impact while creating income. Some other businesses that I have worked with are photographers, event planners, coaches, and non-profits, to name a few.
