We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristeen LaBrot-Widmyer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristeen, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Dealing with imposter syndrome has definitely been a journey. I focus on my wins, even the small ones, to remind myself that I bring something unique to the table. Honest feedback from mentors and colleagues helps too—it’s a good reminder that no one has it all figured out. And I’ve learned not to compare myself to what I see on social media—real life is rarely as perfect as it looks online!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a wedding producer with over 25 years in the event industry, focusing on weddings for the past 16 years. I also work in graphic design, with Strictly Personal Designs handling high-end events and Cat & Tiger Designs focusing on mitzvahs and smaller parties.
I love designing events and bringing everything together through graphic details. Even on a budget, you can make a wedding feel luxe by adding personalized touches, like menus with each guest’s name at the top.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creative Design: Bringing a unique, cohesive style to every event—whether high-end or on a budget—will set your work apart
Client Relationships: Building trust and understanding clients’ visions is essential in making them feel supported
Adaptability: Staying calm and solving problems quickly is crucial. I always tell clients that something will go wrong, but it’s my team’s job to fix it before they even notice!
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My wedding planner partner, Sarah, has been incredibly helpful. She’s the yin to my yang. After having kids, I wasn’t sure I could keep up with the hectic lifestyle of an event planner, but she’s been key in helping me find balance.
