We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristen Folden. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristen below.
Kristen, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
One of my professors in music once told our class when we were feeling inferior to remember that no one can play our heart. This was an a music class but it applies to my art. I realize that I have experiences, strengths, pain and joy that no one else knows except me. If i can focus on painting what’s in my heart, and I know I am being authentic and have no reason to worry.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My art always tells a story. And it I layer everything that I’m feeling, learning, and doing in my life. Often I include cheap music from the music I am learning in my professional career. Sometimes it’s poetry from my favorite poet or words from the Bible. I always sent to my work around a relationship or a deep experience in my life. Because of this, you can look closely and see many layers throughout my work and all the layers are part of the story of the art.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One thing that I did was look for artists that I really loved, either on Instagram or galleries and then I would see if I could contact those artists to learn more about them and their process. Because of that, I’ve been able to take classes from the artists that I loved and learn more about their Techniques. This has been invaluable to me.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I consider myself a very unique artist in that I incorporate faith and music into my work. One of my obstacles is trying to find the correct audience and trying to become known in those areas.
