Kristopher , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Often times, going into the arts is a futile endeavor, I’m well aware of that. However, more than one of my personal heroes have stated that when they pursued their dream, there was no plan B. I’ve been around a long time and realized I never really had a plan A.
At this point in my life, and in the condition I’m in, I have very little to lose anymore. I may as well do something I’m passionate about than die slowly doing things I loathe.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Right now, my life is in a holding pattern. I have Crohn’s Disease and over the past six years had more than my fair share of surgeries. With my condition as bad as it is, among other ailments, I’m stuck and unable to work.

Upon being nearly unemployable, I dove headfirst into a new hobby and it quickly took over whatever time I had on my hands.

I started making fluid art. Watching paint move across the canvas fascinated me, along with all the fun and exciting methods used in that particular art form. This lead to my attempts to paint more realistic/recognizable paintings.

I find I have the most fun coming up with a plan and then completely changing that plan the moment I start to paint.

Artistry simply cannot be anything except personal and passionate, and that is what makes it exciting.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Imagination is the most important tool. If you don’t think you have a good imagination, just try and create – you’ll surprise yourself.

Secondly, you have to stop hesitating. Don’t let your mind wander to thoughts like “What if I’m terrible?” and instead wonder “What if I’m proud of what I create?”

Patience is another quality necessary. You’re most likely not going to like your first work of art – or maybe even your tenth. But, with each attempt, you will improve.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest current challenge is living with a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. I’ve had it for a while, but it takes a lot of getting used to and isn’t always a mood enhancer.

Aside from that, my hearing is going, my back is in constant pain, and I feel older than I am.
