We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KUAN-HSUAN LU a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi KUAN-HSUAN, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism primarily stems from the kindness of my family, the love of my friends, and the understanding of my boyfriend. I am fortunate to have a warm and caring family whose support and understanding serve as the foundation of my optimism. Additionally, my friends inspire me with their love, and their companionship and support allow me to see the beauty in life. My boyfriend, with his accommodating attitude, accompanies me through the ups and downs, and his understanding and support solidify my optimistic approach to facing various challenges. In summary, these precious relationships have built my optimistic beliefs, assuring me that no matter the difficulties, the love and support around me will be the strength propelling me forward.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work in design, where I blend illustrations to create visually captivating experiences. My skills cover brand definition, visual design, graphics, UI, and illustration. What excites me most is bringing stories to life through illustrations, giving a unique touch to the overall design.
Looking forward, I aim to expand into typography, video, 3D, and motion design. I love using creativity to solve problems and making complex information understandable through fun visuals. My goal is to make design not just visually pleasing but also a powerful communication tool.
I’m thrilled about upcoming projects, delving into typography, video creation, 3D design, and motion graphics. These ventures reflect my commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and making a meaningful impact through creativity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back at my design journey, three key elements have significantly influenced my path. First, maintaining a genuine passion for design and fostering curiosity about its possibilities has been crucial. This love for what I do propels creativity and encourages continuous exploration. To those starting their design journey, my advice is to cultivate a sincere passion for design and maintain unwavering curiosity. Second, consistent practice has played a fundamental role in honing my design skills. Regular engagement in design exercises and projects has not only improved abilities but also helped discover a unique style. For those beginning their design journey, dedicating time to regular practice is crucial, as each project offers an opportunity for growth. Lastly, staying attuned to design trends and industry developments is essential for relevance and innovation. Early in your design career, make a habit of staying updated on current trends and embracing new tools to stay ahead in the evolving landscape of design.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents taught me to be a helpful and generous person from a young age, and to prioritize happiness. They never cared about whether I was successful or how much money I earned; their main concern was whether I was happy and doing what I loved. They consistently supported me in every decision I made. These teachings and their unwavering support have deeply influenced me. I believe in the power of encouragement, and that it is always greater than the power of criticism.
