Meet Kween Kat

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kween Kat a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kween, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose came from realizing that people who look and speak like me didn’t have positive representation. My mother’s and I are from Liberia, West Africa and my father’s people are from Nigeria, West Africa. Nigerians are well known and as of recent, highly popular for being the best at whatever they do. Liberians on the other hand have not had it so easy since most of us were displaced due to a 14 year civil war. I saw that there were really talent artist and entrepreneurs that were Liberian and I wanted to highlight their greatness so I created Hart-Felt Media LLC. We are “A media company dedicated to properly promoting artists and entrepreneurs through the power of social media.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Professionally I go by Kween Kat and I am a 29 year old founder of Hart-Felt Media LLC. I was born in Liberia, West Africa to a Nigerian dad and Liberian mom named Fannie Gaye Hoggard. . I was literally born durning a civil war & my mom’s tribe was going through a genocide. Thank God for my maternal grandfather who is now deceased God rest his soul was Major David Gaye in the Liberian army we were heavy protected. My dad had to go back to Nigeria after the war started and he and my mom broke up. My mom, I and the rest of her siblings left Liberia when I was two years old and lived on a refugee camp until I was four and we moved to the Rhode Island, East America thank to my maternal grandmother Mrs. Ruth Soe Bowier. While in Rhode Island I attend two Catholic schools where I developed a love for reading and history. My mother and her now husband sought out a better life in Charlotte, NC and I attend the last two years of middle through college. Due to my love of reading, history and ability to properly articulate my words I decided to use all these skills and become a journalist. This is why Hart-Felt Media LLC was created to should the world that Liberia and Africa in a whole has some extremely talented artists and entrepreneurs.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith, confidence and a professionalism are the three skills that have and are still helping in this marathon known as entrepreneurship. I am a believer in the God of Abraham and Jesus Christ is my lord and savior. Without GOD I would not be here, physically, mentally and spiritually. He carried me safely through the war in Liberia, West Africa. He is my peace when I am overwhelmed and he saved my soul so that I can be with him once I am no longer physically alive. I am highly confident in my ability to do anything. I set my mind to. Finally I exhibit professionalism in each and everything I do especially when it comes to business.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My support system is super helpful when I need to overcome challenges with my business. My given family like my bother Fannie, my aunts Lucia & Josephine. My cousin Monica also encourages me when I have challenges with my business. My chosen family Fifi, Daisy & Brittney are also very supportive. Finally my friend Brittany and my production manager keep me encouraged when I face business related challenges.
